I'm not alone with that view Andrew. It's why, I believe, the same populism we see in Ireland, Georgia, Germany, Serbia, Finland etc. is gaining so much traction in england. i.e. there's a genuine (not r/w) underlying desire to withdraw from the UK Union and "british" thing by the english.

No, there isn’t. There is a right wing populism that is having a moment, but evident in Wales and Scotland and omnipresent in NI. But England is the most happily multicultural country in Europe, despite that unpleasant underbelly.

As someone who *clears throat* visits england often I cannot think of a more unhappy European nation, Andrew. My point is the unpleasant underbelly is the same all across Europe. I notice an extra layer on top of the toxic nationalism on display in england.

Yes I grant you, the English are miserable fuckers. I’m on holiday in Càdiz and am amazed by how happy everyone seems. Mind you, beautiful beaches, perfect sunshine, quaint buildings… it would be hard not to be happy here.

All the racists are having an away day to central London so I dare say you will find Hertfordshire rather more pleasant than normal.

yep. no political party is pushing it...or UK media covering it...but underneath brexit & the toxic flagshagging we see now, there's a genuine resurgence of "englishness". FO'Toole explains better than I could 👇
