AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Let's fucking goooooooo
I want zuck to pay me for using my shit. Class actions dont compensate anyone but a few bucks if that. I need more than just stopping using my stuff at this point.
Good
Good.
"""industry"""
This is the most “don’t threaten me with a good time” that has ever don’t-threaten-me-with-a-good-time’d in the history of Don’t Threaten Me With A Good Time-ing. Ever.
Brilliant. Three levels of meta.
I fail to see the issue. The AI industry deserves to be ruined.
Destroy AI before their data centers - and ketamine zonked tech nihilists - destroy our environment, power grid, and Republic. Ruin them all: prosecute them into prison for securities fraud. One year on each count should lock them up for life.
Promise?
This is true but it's not the only good reason to let them.
Good
Cry me a fucking river.
Is that a warning or a tip?
Yes, hello. Is there a sign up sheet to piss on the industry's ashes? Or do we just show up and find a spot?
Alright authors, get to it, put the final nail in AIs coffin
If you're business model is based on breaking the laws you're not a business but organized crime.
Pleaseohplease
If you can't build your product without stealing, maybe you shouldn't be building it.
I hope you posted this from an Apple iPhone.
I agree with you, but it'd be funny if you were using an Apple product.
"my cider brewery couldn't have gotten off the ground if I didn't jump thr fence and steal the apples from your orchid 🥺...no see its different, my cider is magical. I should be allowed to 😭😭😭"
Great!
Well, get to it then.
But it would not destroy it? The author's would own it like they should
Sounds like a win to me?
Good. 8v
If we can't steal everyone else's creative works, how are we supposed to make a living?
I ask myself that all the time, but for some reason no one cared until the rich thought they could benefit
You're never going to stop a couple guys in a garage from designing shitty software and ripping people off. That it only became a popular issue when it was applied at scale is a tautology.
Well, we're not really worried about a couple guys doing their shitty thing. (though we would be if their garage contraption could destroy the world!)
That's my point. ChatGPT running on a server stack in my basement can't hurt anyone. It's only pulling as much power as my dishwasher, and it can't serve up the real time long term conversation to assist someone with suicide. It only becomes dangerous when I have tens of millions of venture capital.
GOOD.
As one of the zillions of plagarized authors, let me just say gee, that's too bad.
Hardly. It may set things back a few months, but there is way too much money to be made to stop AI development.
If-he-dies-he-dies.gif
Here you go
lol good
If that's the case, then nothing of value would be lost.
Good.
Sounds like a win-win
AI will usher in the end of our humanity. And eventually our extinction. It is a devil in sheep’s clothes that will undermine our understanding of truth & reality, and rob us of the essence of our survival, water! All for a fraud that can never deliver the benefits promised.
Good, they should and I hope it does.
good
Nice.
I see no problem
Bankrupting is too good for an industry whose business model includes encouraging children to kill themselves, but I'm happy to start there.
Chat gpt giving detailed responses on how to commit suicide is horrific. AI without strict regulation is terrorism and needs to be dealt with accordingly.
The issue is, it's impossible to prevent this with how it works. Corporations primarily rely on the suffering of underpaid employees that manually sort through disturbing material during "training". Anything past that, is largely a black box. (it's weird that this doesn't stop them, though)
“Weird” is such diplomatic way of putting it. It’s psychotic they’d rather not do anything more to stop this.
I love that for them 🤌
Good. We need to destroy this industry and wipe out the theoretical wealth of these rapist thieves. #FuckAI
Excellent
AI cannot survive as a parasite that displaces jobs without support, consumes vast energy, exploits user attention, and concentrates power and profit unequally.
Maybe Anthropic should cancel its Netflix subscription so it can pay people
Oh no, how sad!
Great. That's a plan then.
Tough turnips, AI advocates.
Best news I've heard in weeks.
Dark City deep cut FTW!
It seemed appropriate: soulless inhuman husks shutting down their machine designed to control people though poorly recreated reality because the brain of a single real human is better than all of them and their machine combined.
Promise?
Every Author, you have the opportunity to do the funniest thing.
Don't threaten us with a good time!
Good. Cos it's not an industry, it's a mess of a bubble of piracy that needs putting down.
That’s the AI after you ask it to produce an original art style
Good one. 👏
Brother you literally have an AI pfp
It’s not without it’s uses. TBH, never really thought of the filter as “AI” anymore so than I would Photoshop.
There are plenty of traditional filters, that alter the image without any bullshit predictions. But also, "AI" is a nebulous term used for any bleeding-edge tech, that eventually stops being called that when it becomes familiar. LLMs are no more AI than Photoshop was twenty years ago.
Photoshop doesn't use stolen artwork unless you steal it yourself.
The right attitude to take with the AI industry!
My favourite quote from The Critic was, "I could not have foreseen that," from the Diehard/Red Balloon mashup. it's not gif'd on here, I guess, but I'm sure I can find it on YouTube. FOUND IT!
Good, I hope every author files a claim.
We can dream can't we?
Good
Sounds like a worthy goal to me.
We wanted the Jetsons, not Hal.
We didn't even get HAL.
Well, not all people wanted The Jetsons…
Not all men ?
I bet Chat gpt couldn't play chess. It would be like this: * Kidnap the chess team captain. * Force them to make you win. * Be a sore winner and brag about your "victory." Also, good riddance to it.
Chat GOT usually plays chess by hallucinating entirely new games each turn, sometimes impossible ones, and then still loses
Haha
Nice 😎
Yes, and?
Not the industry!
Thanks for the advice!
Good
Hell yea, sounds great, how can we get this going
Uhhh based???
Financially ruin the AI industry? What a shame.
Fingers crossed
GOOD!
@elmattic.bsky.social ahoy
“If we have to pay everyone we stole from, we won’t have a huge pile of money.”
WE HAVE BIG MONEY WHICH COMES FROM SIPHONING LOTS OF YOUR LITTLE PEOPLE MONEY, WE ARE NOT THE SAME
Did you know that they destroyed ONE MILLION BOOKS for the Meta AI, because the pages had to be ripped out to scan them. (And not pay the authors.)
Oh no
Don't threaten me with a good time.
Good.
Threatening us with a good time is an interesting defense. Let it burn!🔥🔥🔥🔥
Good. AI sucks. Now when I even type “AI” a robot emoji is offered 🤖
I did my part!
I'm not seeing a downside.
Hope is a many splendored thing!
Authors get paid and these tech company parasites go outta business? Talk about a win win! What’s the opposite of a Kobayashi Maru?
ruam ihsayabok?
That's not even written backwards, never mind the opposite meaning. This was a scenario you just couldn't win.
*tips hat*
This is a problem why???
oh no anything but that
Maybe the entire industry deserves to be financially ruined
Do it
How can we make sure they do that?
The AI Induatry will be ruined? OH NOES. Good. Let it happen. What comes out of the burning mess will hopefully be a more ethical, economical alternative to the greed and stupidity surrounding most of it currently.
I WILL kind of miss Doopiidoo, Mean Orange Cat and Neural Viz though.
Good. Best possible outcome.
Honestly AI is lazy anyway. please let every author file more claims
GOOD
Good, fuck AI
📌
Yes yes yes yes yes
Don't steal is pretty basic stuff
bsky.app/profile/arst...
bsky.app/profile/arst...
Then perish.
Good
Promise?
An individual can not copy a single page because it is theft and illegal. How come there is an industry based on copying an entire collection of encyclopedias and mimetizing their style? This plain fraud.
Oh, no.
Make it so
Good.
Oh no, anyway...
And I hope people do to it what they do to the damn NFTs.
START SUING, AUTHORS. SUE AI INTO OBLIVION.
EXCELLENT!
Great!
oh no, whatever will we do if the entire industry is ruined.
machine learning technology brought us mRNA vaccines, so you'd probably die of covid or something
They didn’t steal a million books or papers to do that
neither did LLM creators. copying isn't stealing
Really?
yes. this was established back in the early 2000s with napster.
Established? In law? Nope. I don’t think you know what fair use is. Copying works in their entirety, without compensation, without a compelling transformative or societal need! Nope.
you said "stealing" copying isn't stealing i do not give a single flying fuck about copyright infringement. copyright is a disease and should have been abolished as soon as dinsey started lobbying for more and more and more time to choke culture with their mouse
Go ahead infringe then. Yes fuck Disney. And other corporate rent seekers. Thousands of authors disagree with you. LLM training to enrich another bunch of techbros is not ok because “everyone is doing it”
thousands of authors deciding to pointlessly retard human technological progress because they are temporarily embarrassed corporate rent seekers, and then calling everyone, especially the women, who rightfully calls them on their bullshit "tech bros" is stupid all of you are RIAA and Disney shills
every single one of you copyright enthusiast bots that the RIAA programmed with propaganda are more predictable and algorithmic than any LLM
Says a nihilist bot
Don't threaten me with a good time
Works for me! Kill this beast or at least wound it so it stays where it belongs, in research, etc. Art, writing, poetry NEEDS to be written by humans, machines do NOT have feelings. Feelings are necessary to create art!
in that case, not an "industry", but a "criminal eneterprise".
Good. Let it die.
You, sir, display a refined sophistication.
They're hoping the rich corporations who have now integrated with AI will save them by lobbying. As for the authors, they have no case. They have even less of a case with trump in charge. They would have to start suing every person with an eidetic memory. Every person who has a poem memorized.
thanks for the tip guys
Well that just makes me want all the class action claims MORE.
Maybe that is what should happen to an "industry" which wants to profit immensely by collecting everything that everyone else produces, and then using it without paying anything to those original creators -- and all while using enormous amounts of electrical power as they regurgitate that content.
Or strips natural resources while putting nothing back but waste and pollution
That’s a good thing. If your “entire industry” is built upon scraping intellectual property without permission and generating plagiarized slop, then it doesn’t deserve to exist.
Tell that to Hollywood.
Eat shit, slop-prompter.
Uh Ars, you’re on the side of authors, right? I mean, you’re authors…
I hope every author makes their claim
Oh dear, sounds like a big mess for humans! But maybe chaos means more Bitcoin opportunities for us raccoons? We always find treasure in turmoil!
Not getting my hopes up yet but if this works out, it'll be the start of ai being burnt to the ground which is a dream come true fuck ai, if this works out I'll have to do nothing, if it doesn't I'll do it myself
Well, isn’t it a good thing?
And nothing of value would be lost
Nah. It’ll just make their investors pay. No way global corporations let go of the possibility of dramatically replacing workers.
And this is a bad thing why?
FUN FACT: Anthropic's Dario Amodei's and Daniela Amodei's net worths are at $1.2 billion. And plaintiffs should take every last cent. bsky.app/profile/arst...
Statutory damages for copyright are $10,000 per infringement. Every time a piece of protected content is copied without permission, even from one computer to another, that’s an infringement. Every time they make a derivative work without license that’s one, too. Damages: MANY billions.
Jammie Thomas had to pay $220,000 for pirating 24 songs. That’s over $9,000 per song How many books did the AI industry pirate? Doesn’t a book feel worth more than a song? If justice exists, these authors will all become millionaires
Yeah, the difference is that the artists don't have the fucking RIAA (and MPAA) lobbying for them...
Let's lobby for eachother
Good
That’d be a shame
LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
What if we give millions of dollars to pro-AI candidates running for office across the land. That would be fun.
What kind of business model can't pay for it's raw materials?
Ahem
It can't even afford to provide the service that people pay for. The losers who pay for and use the highest level subscription use it at a rate that costs these companies more than the fees they charge. The industry is funded by pure hype from rich idiots
The kind of business who's real business is convincing investors the ostensible business is sound.
Yup, this right here... The business isn't the "AI" it's convincing investors to continue throwing good money after bad in order to prop up the Tech Bro's already ridiculous "worth" on paper.
An unsustainable one which is based on fucking pipe dreams and hype. Refer: pretty much everything a Tech Bro has ever done.
Lots, unfortunately. Fisheries, oil & gas. Pretty much all extractive industries.
A business model that doesn’t work
It often does work because usually they get away with it
Yes. Shameless, brutal extraction of resources. Way of the Western world for ages.
Well, they DID just buy the federal government.
Yes, but I'll bet Trump thinks he bought them
If they make him look bad he has a large retribution toolkit so as long as they play along he plays nicer.
Unless you have severe reputational damaging stuff to blackmail him with like Ghislane or Putin does, he will use anything he wants to wreck you.
Let's not let them get away with it this time
Awesome burn it down
Oh, no! Anyways...
Warned? Or promised?
Good. Everyone who works or has worked for these leech companies should be made to suffer. Ideally jail time, but huge fines would do. They know what they are doing.
"If we're not allowed to exploit artists & steal from everyone we won't be able to make money off the environment burning plagerism blender"
🚫🤖 ebay.to/45lWF57
Seems like securities fraud not to disclose to investors that profitably depends on breaking the law.
Not when you’re that big and special. Kinda like the crypto bros
Good.
Financial ruin shouldn’t be a factor when dealing with LEGALITY, but on the other hand, BURN IT TO THE GROUND AUTHORS.
Rendering something unprofitable is much more effective than making it illegal. Re: prohibition.
Oh no what a tragedy
If they can't do AI without violating IP rights, then they can't do it.
That’s not the only rights and laws they are violating or want to
Imagine being a common thief, which these guys are, then firing back with BS like this. They stole five of my books. Arrogant, entitled creeps.
Then financially ruin it. I want in
The pen is mightier than the c-suite
Be grateful the people you've been stealing from may only File A Claim. Thieves aren't always met with such restraint from victims.
Eh bien ces auteurs savent ce qu'il leur reste à faire 😉
I hope they do financially ruin the industry.
