Its claim is that 22% of the world’s PRISON population is in the US, not that 22% of the world is in prison.

thanks for the clarification. so again: over 11M are incarcerated throughout the world. the usa has 1.8M in its jails & prisons. that would mean usa has at most 16% of all the world's prisoners. if it was 22%, there's be 2,420,000. that's a difference of 620,000. over 1/3 more than this meme claims.

The percentage varies between 16% and 25%, depending on the source. However, the US population accounts for just 5% of the global population. That is 3 to 5 times the average.

i did not find that. everything i found was at least three years old and 1.8m was a most recent 2022 study. i'd like to know if you have a source. also, there's surely more with this ice thing but they're not citizens and it'll take a while before any stats are compiled since the admin is gonna lie.

I have a PDF on my HD from an ACLU report in 2022. Don't know the original provenance, but the report was mostly a "raise the alarm" type thing about the fact that around 150,000 people had been sitting in jail for two or more years just waiting for a trial date.

besides websites, i took my answer from a vera institute (vera.org) pdf which states in a chart on page 2 that 1,827,100 were incarcerated in 2022. i did not find an aclu pdf with the info you state. screenshot? vera-institute.files.svdcdn.com/production/d...

when i was in new orleans jail (short story is, beat up drug dealer 'cause he threatened me with a pistol), there were dudes in their jails which had been there for seven years. seven. but the ones i knew, they were horrible people. but maybe that's what happens after seven years in hell.

I believe the system deliberately breeds and nurtures the monsters it needs to justify the repression it needs to maintain the system.
