I went to school in a rural, conservative area and was raised in a very conservative household. I did not know that Japanese internment camps existed or that that was part of our history until I followed you around ten years ago. Thank you for being part of my growth journey 🫶

It's tragic that it's hidden. It adds context to WHY it's ok to enter illegally and then ask for asylum. I've stagger a few MAGA types by pointing out we sent Jews back to Germany. "Yeah, but this is different" after a few moments. But it still gets through. I just hope the seed stays planted...

There is a trend where people don’t blame kids for not knowing important things but readily blame adults who still don’t know, as if they could magically run into the information that they didn’t know they didn’t have. We have no choice but to speak up, educate, and guide humanity toward good.

I learned about it at San Diego State - California History was IIRC a mandatory course for graduation.

Covering up the more shameful parts of American history is not new. Education books published in Texas for decades presented slanted views of American history taught in our schools.

7th grade Texas history in Lubbock failed to mention that the revolution was because Mexico had outlawed slavery and the white Texians wanted to keep it.

I’m embarrassed to admit something similar. I was in grad school before I heard of the interment camps- from a person whose parents were held in one while he was in the army during WWII. Rest in peace Dr. Tamashiro.

I was informed as a teen watching "Return to Manzanar" on TV. I was stunned that I hadn't been taught about this. Also, the Tulsa massacre. ☹️

We toured one in Idaho (I believe it’s a national monument) and went to a memorial on Bainbridge Island in WA.

I read George T's manga book about his experience as a child. It's very well written and taught me a lot. I highly recommend it. I checked it out of my local library.

I only knew about it from a CBC (News and TV station) thing David Suzuki did. Even though hes a well known Canadian Environmentalist, we never learned about it in school... Thought most of what I learned up until Uni was though library books, TV and online boards versus public school (90s and urban)

and it hasnt changed... almost all of what ive learned abt history is from the internet. i only rly actually learned any history in school when i took AP courses. which i find insane. why does it take an AP course for me to get to learn anything outside of the very basics of American history??

I didn't learn about them until after college. My Panama Canal Zone high school was pretty invested in maintaining a colonial system where White was always right.

I did 12-years hard time in private school. I learned about it in college. I struggled to believe it was true. I couldn't believe my government would do that to citizens, and that my schools wouldn't teach it.

I'm glad you were able to finally learn about the atrocities. Republicans are HELL BENT on hiding America's crimes against humanity. WHY? It's part of our history. It takes absolutely nothing away from them as people to acknowledge the past. It only proves they, too, have something to hide.

There were a lot of things we weren't taught about American History. I didn't know about the Greenwood massacre and the destruction of Black Wallstreet until a couple of years ago. Embarrassing. I didn't know about the WV miners and fighting with private security.
