I like Newsom and he's a great surrogate for Dems on TV, but I think he'd get vilified as an out of touch California liberal even more than Harris was.

Agreed. He has what I call a "De Santis" problem. Florida absolutely LOVES De Santis but he doesn't play well at all on the national stage. I think Newsom would have that same fight from the opposite end of the political spectrum. I still think he would have beat our big, orange, special boy. :)

How do you imagine that the right wing will be able to take him as "out of touch"? The guy is running the largest by far state in the country and the fifth largest economy in the world if it was a country. He has a huge diverse 40 million people state to run. How is he "out of touch"? Of what?

They'll just run video of the homeless in the cities in CA over & over again.... and then videos of crime in CA as well. Doesn't matter that crime is worse in most red states - the crimes in CA will be the ones that get airplay and would force Newsom to respond.

If we have free & fair elections in 2028, it likely won't be Trump running again, so Jan 6 will not be as big an issue to most Americans. And, since the right has a much bigger media megaphone, anything the Democrats do in response will almost certainly get drowned out by the GOP 100 fold.

But the "right leaning public" as you call it. That's nowhere near a big percentage of America. I think the big majority of America is Middle independent, MALE &leans Democratic on most issues. Trump was elected because of the weak choice of Harris, and of course Biden dropping out way too late.
