I do think drivers understand the prevalence of accidents and risks but simply don't care because they enjoy the self-control they feel while driving. It makes them feel powerful and in charge. People love to drive. It's an addiction.

Today a light in SW Minneapolis was dark. And as I watched cars just drive right through, my first thought was, “how do drivers not know to treat this like a 4-way stop?” But then I realized that driving through without stopping IS exactly how they drive up to and through a stop sign.
The base instinct is to just keep driving and never stop or slow down because it doesn't feel natural. Driving a car messes with spatial awareness and time perception so much that I honestly think it actively causes mental health issues.
When I was crossing the street downtown today, a guy turned right on red and almost hit me. I held out my arms like “what the hell, man?” He flipped me off and laughed at me.
