Everything with a computer in it is going to eventually charge a subscription fee to work. Try to buy a new printer and you will see what I mean.

Just because I haven’t needed to shop for a printer lately… are you talking about ink cartridge subscriptions or something even MORE awful?

The thing that makes the subscriptions awful is that if you cancel you can't print, even if your printer is well stocked with ink/toner and paper. Thanks HP.

I’m sorry, I wasn’t completely clear. Are they requiring a subscription just to use proprietary software each time you print or something similar? I e never heard of this and it sounds utterly insane.

Yeah you need the subscription to print but you don't need proprietary software on your computer, other than the print driver. When you cancel the subscription though, you need to buy new cartridges as the ones you have are tied to the account. Even if they're full - they go in the bin.

Yeah that's exactly it. And when you stop paying you can no longer print and your printer is just an ornament until you go and buy cartridges separately.

No problem. Yeah it's hard to believe. I just double checked what I was saying and it looks like HP actually cancelled the programme recently. I suspect they did that after they starting appearing in the mainstream media and people started gathering pitchforks... www.pcworld.com/article/2390...

Ugh yeah. I'd avoid any company that uses those tactics. The choices are diminishing though, fewer and fewer companies that are on *your* side. The inability to buy a non-smart TV really bothers me too.

Those freaking printers. My grandma was asking me to make a 2 hours trip to help her print because she needed to connect to an account. She was printing 2 times a weeks. Grrr

Yup I found that out. I decided not to have a printer at all and use the local library's instead.
