I made a visit to Los Altos city library today to relax and enjoy the cool air (thanks to A/C) @rolandnissanart.bsky.social once advised me to draw what's in front of me, so I did. Very small sketchbook 5x5in. Painting in soluble graphite ArtGraf with brush pen #urban #sketch #art

Small sketch in shades of grey drawn with soluble graphic ArtGraf. Shows from the back 3 library visitors sitting facing a large window as they read. Outdoors ther are flowers, shrubs and conifer trees. Sketch by Ellen Friedman

Great composition, we’ve cooled here slightly Ellen. That was a great plan on a hot day 🤗

Thanks, Pam. I did the figures first and was tempted to stop: interesting to not see what they saw out of the window. But also fun to do the trees/ foliage. Now I need to encourage myself to do some painting bigger than 5 inches! MUCH cooler here today: 27C high instead of 33C. Hooray!

Thanks, Elizabeth. It surely was fun to do. I did the figures first and in some ways liked it at that stage better than with the view outside the window filled in. More mystery that way 😄

Thanks, Roland. I "hear" your comment each time I hesitate or start trying to make the whole process too complicated. At last minute heading out for appts & then library, I imagined your comment and so threw in v small sketchbook, tin of ArtGraf graphite + two little water brush pens. Easy!

I'm so happy to read this Ellen. It doesn't take much effort, and you are so good at it. You get used to doing them quickly too. I used to do them during my work's lunch hour. That included getting out of the office and finding a subject.

Thanks Arjen, much appreciated. Have you tried ArtGraf soluble graphite? More common in EU than here I think

I do have soluble graphite pencils. Not shure of the brand.

The type of ArtGraf I use comes in small cake in a tin, and I paint it on with a brush

On left of photo, ArtGraf soluble graphite: round cake in a tin that is open, with lid showing name above. A small sketchbook sketch of pond in Japanese garden is held by artist's hand. On right is a water brush pen used to make this small painting. Photo and painting by Ellen Friedman
