We had a doctor on our hospital staff, graduated top of his class at Harvard Med, who did just that. When any of his records came up for peer review, he balked saying it couldn’t be done because, amongst the staff (800+ docs!), he “had no peers.” Intelligence acknowledged. Liked? No. Respected? No.
Academic excellence and intelligence aren’t the same thing. I’ve always told my children that success is ability plus hard work. What you lack in ability, you make up in work. Plenty of idiots graduate from Harvard.
I taught there as a temporary junior faculty member, and you are absolutely right. Some of them are both bright and hard working, some are bright but lazy, and some are dumb and lazy but have a huge sense of entitlement.
I attended for a while. I already had an MBA and realized it was just a larger work load. The concepts are the same.
