I met Ms. Knox at Powells Books in Portland in May. She was warm, approachable, and kind. I admire her for transcending the cruelty of others and not, in the words of Springsteen’s famous lyric, “end[ing] up like a dog that’s been beat too much ‘til you spend half your life just covering up.” Brava.
