The usual argument is "self protection" but I've never seen a news report about shootings that were protection. It's always attacks on others. Not always innocents, but that's not even relevant. My neighbour sez there is a Murican belief that civil war is inevitable, and that is why guns abound.
The ancestors of the Confederacy carry the trauma from losing to the Union (sore losers). Lincoln appeased the losers rather than punish them for being traitors. We are living with the remnants of unresolved anger because the white supremacists lost their ability to own other humans for free labor.

Lincoln and his administration were already planning for Reconstruction before his death. He believed it was best to focus on reuniting The South and not placing blame for the war. Lincoln even gave amnesty to some in the Confederacy before his death.
