The good news is that I visited Portugal this week. The bad news is that America let me back in.😂

Don’t despair you’ll either be arbitrarily arrested and imprisoned or snatched off the street and deported in due course. 😳
Did you have pasteis de nata? Surf in Nazare? Get to see the Azores?
I’m headed to Europe in a couple weeks and was debating if I should delete my social media
Good on you for coming back... It would be tempting to stay away for awhile.
I'm looking to move there this summer. It's been a nightmare getting a passport- never should have let mine lapse for so long. Going sight unseen, but hear great things & have traveled around Europe enough to have an inkling. Still... a little nervous.
Yes, too bad. Being stranded in Portugal would be my dream!
Saúde! 🍷🇵🇹
I visited Portugal in January. I loved it and was also sad to return to the US.
I am glad you decided to come back! Using your Lenten devotional RISE again this year. It is so relevant to these times, it's it's uncanny. Thank you.
How was that? What are their thoughts on the American people?
As a German, I can say we know the difference between Americans and MAGAs. So don't worry. 😉
I’m headed there this fall. I hope they’ll still accept me!!!
Oooh heading there this fall to scout as a potential place to retire. I hear it’s been discovered and that lots of expats are moving there and things are getting more expensive.
True. Also Alicante and Bilbao in Spain. We’re seeing a lot of expats here in Holland too.
We call them American refugees.
I spent some time in Spain in Catalonia a few years ago and absolutely loved it. I’ve been to Holland a few times, but only to Rotterdam and Amsterdam. I absolutely loved Holland and its people.
The weather in the winter can be bleak, gray and damp with only about 6 hours of light per day… but the summers lately are lovely… light from 6am to 11pm and temps in mid-high 70s. I’ve been a US expat for 26 years and it’s the best thing I ever did!
The Brits beat you there by 30 years. That’s part of why their local economy nosedived in 2008.
True but it's still pretty nice here
Oh man I would love to hear more! I’m going to spend a few days in Lisbon but more interested in other parts of the country. The Algarve coast is beautiful and I want to visit but with climate change I’m concerned it’s getting too hot
Portugal is beautiful, lots of history and many small towns.Don’t visit during July/August as it’s very busy in Algarve. If moving there go with the mindset that it’s an old country and treat locals with respect as it’s their country.
Appreciate the advice. I’m well traveled all over Europe and always respect the culture of the country I visit.
We're heading back to the US tomorrow after a house hunting trip.
Would you consider living there?
Must have been wonderful.
One more smart ass post like this and they’ll never let you back in. Now you’re in danger of being disappeared. ( just joking, or not)
I think you are a masochist. You got out and you decided to come back? That's masochism.
@johnpavlovitz.bsky.social — hope you enjoyed. It’s a stunning country
I'm surprised Portugal let an American in.
Don't tell me white privilege doesn't exist!
I wanted to retire there, back when I thought I would have a retirement. I hope it's still beautiful.
you mean they didn't check your phone
That is the one place in the world (Porto) I would make the effort to go. Drink Port until my liver quite, call it good and go home. Then let the kids dump my ashes where ever they like. Well I suppose I'd try to stay alive long enough to have the opportunity to piss on Trumps grave.
Better than sending you to El Salvador
We were in Portugal in December. The temptation to stay was strong.
Portugal is pretty tolerant of us, we're (Americans) a time fraction of the immigrant population here. 👍
We came to Portugal in 2022, it seems an even better decision at the moment.
Ya, we don’t want you here.
We're still in Portugal and not too excited about leaving...
