Oh wow. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/07/u...
Wow is right
So, the Johnson Amendment has been abolished? Are we taxing churches now?
Regardless, if a pastor endorses political candidates from the pulpit of a church I attend, I won't attend anymore.
It is only fair, but I fear in my lifetime this nation is fucked as far as having actual freedom is concerned and will never happen.
Churches have been too loose with the amendment for a while now. Many hosting presidential candidates under the guise of having them as a guest for their sermon, even though they brought them on stage and led the congregation in cheering for them. This was the inevitable conclusion.
both Republicans and Democrats have used churches etc. Time to finally say no more or tax the religious facilities IMO
I agree. Even if the candidate has been a member of a church since childhood, that church should not highlight that individual. Keep Christ in the pulpit
They've been doing this for decades. Churches have taken away women's rights and installed maga.
They already do so big whoop
Let’s face it, they weren’t enforcing it anyway
Yeah, but churches have essentially been doing this for a long time.
christian god: creates heaven and earth also christian god: WE CAN'T LET DEMS WIN MIDTERMS
One guess as to who, specifically, they can endorse
Can we also condemn them? In a special service?
They should be paying taxes like everyone else. Well, except not like the oligarchs and big business that pay little.
@americansunited.bsky.social
What????!!!!
This can't be a surprise to anyone. Churches have been doing this, and flaunting it, for decades. Now, instead of ignoring it, the understaffed IRS says "Yeah, okay. Go ahead."
Take 'em to court.
The headline that launched a thousand “Get out the Vote for Jesus” sermons
So much for separation of state and religion! However , to be honest , the way Orange Hitler is pissing off all the churches and religions, this could end up working in our favor. 🤷♀️
At last I am free!

Hey, Pope Leo...please opine. @ewtnvatican.bsky.social
I have actively avoided churches for years. This will include ALL purposes now - including weddings. I will happily share why I won't attend a wedding at a church now.
It really seems like the *so-called Christian Nationalists want to guarantee decreased church attendance. *Yes, I'm gatekeeping, and no, I don't need a No True Scotsman lecture.
I hereby call on satanic churches everywhere to endorse the work Donald Trump is doing for your cause
So are they changing themselves to a 501(c)(4)? If they don't and are allowed to do this, why shouldn't every non-profit be allowed to do the same.
Because Jesus famously made deals with the tax man? 🫠
Yikes
So they can pay taxes now, yeah?
Yeah, that’s some bullsh** - and it shouldn’t be allowed. Of course, the Christofascists have been pushing to end the Johnson Amendment for years. IMO, they need to be treated as the clear & present danger to democracy that they are, and be eliminated.
Tax exempt charitable organizations are strictly prohibited by tax laws from endorsing candidates. Is this action for everyone or just for churches?
Here’s the gift link. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/07/u...
thank you
Just for churches, of course, because look who’s administration that it is.🙁
One can argue the First Amendment guarantees free expression of religion, and somehow political endorsements are an extension of religious practice. But why then is freedom of speech for other nonprofit organizations not protected to advance their interests?
I’m sorry. This is dark 😬
The single most anti-Christian thing this administration has done. Politics corrupts. Religion directly in politics, like money in politics, wild success in technology, or power in anything, corrupts absolutely.
There are rules, but lawyers fight them all the time. Witness Sc*ent*l*gy's efforts. Here's an exerpt of the relevant document with a link to the full doc: www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/...
Just another reason to avoid churches
Pope Leo could do the funniest thing possible by endorsing every MAGA's opponent
So the IRS has on its own repealed an act of Congress, the Johnson Amendment? Remind me, didn't GOP congos get outraged over IRS abuses a few years ago?
Rule of law out the window
They've been doing it anyway.
They can fekking well pay their taxes too then...
That ain't right.
Jfc
What could possibly go wrong? SMH
In that case any 501(c)(3) nonprofit should be able to endorse political candidates. Unless there’s something magical about churches?
Wonder what they'll make of St. John the Divine chanting "Zohran!"
Because rules and laws have been cancelled.
Satanic Temple superpac when?
I thought that was strictly unlawful for obvious reasons?
So make them pay taxes!
I don’t think this is particularly noteworthy. You do not give up your first amendment rights because you work for a nonprofit church or synagogue or mosque. An individual can endorse whomever she/he wants.
Well that's nice. It goes without saying, this is an Article I power and Congress would have to repeal the Johnson Amendment.
Fine. That makes them a PAC. Tax them.
They've been ignoring that for a while now. Still pretty brazen that they made it "official"
They have already been doing that in one city in WA.
Turns out every non-profit is about to be religious
AMEN!
