So, the Johnson Amendment has been abolished? Are we taxing churches now?

Regardless, if a pastor endorses political candidates from the pulpit of a church I attend, I won't attend anymore.

It is only fair, but I fear in my lifetime this nation is fucked as far as having actual freedom is concerned and will never happen.

Churches have been too loose with the amendment for a while now. Many hosting presidential candidates under the guise of having them as a guest for their sermon, even though they brought them on stage and led the congregation in cheering for them. This was the inevitable conclusion.

I agree. Even if the candidate has been a member of a church since childhood, that church should not highlight that individual. Keep Christ in the pulpit

There are rules, but lawyers fight them all the time. Witness Sc*ent*l*gy's efforts. Here's an exerpt of the relevant document with a link to the full doc: www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/...

Jeopardizing Tax-Exempt Status All IRC Section 501(c)(3) organizations, including churches and religious organizations, must abide by certain rules: n their net earnings may not inure to any private shareholder or individual; n they must not provide a substantial benefit to private interests; n they must not devote a substantial part of their activities to attempting to influence legislation; n they must not participate in, or intervene in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office; and n the organization’s purposes and activities may not be illegal or violate fundamental public policy.
