I should note my befuddlement about this is rooted in a concrete journalistic observation: As someone who has covered faith-based advocacy around gun control for more than a decade, it's wild to see how *normal* religious criticism of "thoughts and prayers" rhetoric is, yet how *ignored* it also is.

They know that perfectly well; they just choose to lie about it, because they don't think the Christian left are "real" Christians.

It's almost as if the Bible says something like "I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river,righteousness like a never-failing stream!"
