The Constitution was swallowed long ago. Anyone too poor to afford a lawyer was crossed off the list almost immediately. Now we have this thing called qualified immunity. That’s where cops can punish you up front by beating you and causing you to have to hire a lawyer. Their perfidy goes unpunished.
