Let’s not get lost in one case. What Trump’s doing is flat-out illegal. There’s no war. No reason to invoke the Foreign Enemies Act. Locking someone away for life without trial in a prison camp isn’t “deportation.” This is Argentina 1976 shit. There has to be due process - *for everybody*.
He gives a face and personal story in this mess.. otherwise it’s merely nameless numbers to many people.
I’m worried about the framing. If the outrage is only that Abrego is “innocent”, we shift the Overton window. The point is: deporting people to a foreign gulag without trial is NEVER acceptable. Not for “criminals”, not for anyone. This is fascism, not policy.
I absolutely agree with every word of that. However he is an example of how extreme and unforgiving Trump envisions his system.
There is due process for everyone, or no one. Why? If there is a group that doesn't have a right to due process, every undesirable will be sorted into that group to deny them due process. It always starts off as some scapegoat group and in a few weeks it's anyone critical of the regime.
Rights which don't apply to everyone aren't rights; they're privileges.
