I overhear people who are truly, genuinely upset by the idea of a socialist mayor, including one woman who was spiraling about govt-operated grocery stores meaning rations and breadlines, and meanwhile the feds are shutting down public services and sending goon squads to snatch people off the street
She can still get price gouged by capitalism if she chooses. But, also, Trump's bullshit means she won't be able to afford much food anyway because it's going to be an expensive, hungry winter.
No need to make up things to be afraid of, and yet some people seem to love it!
It would probably just confuse them but you could theoretically calm their worries by telling them that Mamdani isn't actually a socialist
