I have (many) differences when you discuss history. But in this case I cannot but agree. Putin and Xi believe their interests lie in degrading American capabilities to restrain them. I think they are flat wrong, and creating problems for themselves. But we cannot jaw-jaw them.

My only counter-point is that I'm not sure what Trump & co are thinking, or if they even are thinking at all. I see little reason to assume this is even an attempt at cleverness rather than the blinkered worldview of dim and perpetually-angry trolls. They want to smash something, so they will.
