Europe's crusade against air conditioning is insane

Useless drivel since not counting the share of buildings with cooled air. There are more technologies available than old-fashioned dedicated air conditioning units. People install heat pumps and use the same unit to cool their home in for summer as heating during the colder seasons.

I guess this graph explains why I did not recognize the problem. I guess change takes time, because Europeans were not used to need AC, however, I agree climate change makes them necessary

Graph displaying heat pumps per 100,000 people, Norway on top with almost 30k, Finland, Sweden, Estonia following behind and countries like Spain and Germany at around 2k pumps/100k people.

I think this is a culture war version of a recent Fortune opinion piece fortune.com/2025/08/11/e...

I Europe, I have detected no crusade against AC (everyone is rather pro heatpump/inverter around here) and no-one approaching this tech like scared tribesmen. Also, I have a hard time believing that 175,000 Europeans die from heat every year, while it's 175 in the US.

Sincere question: have you ever lived in mainland Europe or the Uk? Most do not care about efficiency and to be able to work more, why would we want that? And we prefer to spend time outside in our lovely public spaces, not in our houses or cars. Boxes lining old buildings isn’t a good look.

it's not just a comfort thing, it's a health thing at this point. it's also more efficient to warm your house with it in winter than using pretty much any other method.

and it's not like I get free time off during scorching hot workdays to go outside, if I have to sit inside I'd rather avoid having it be insufferable.

German here, I think you are missing the most important issue. The external devices are considered as ugly. For american cities that might not be an issue, but Europeans do care about the look of their cities.

The air conditioners are contributing to the increase of heat waves.

Those ACs run just fine on wind, solar, geothermal, and nuclear, my good little Malthusian.

You can say similar things about smoking, alcohol, driving cars, burning coal, wearing guns, lack of health insurance, eating meat ... Btw, I don't know anyone dying during heat periods. So, the risk is probably very comparable to other risks. But yes, probably AC will become more usual in Europe.

you not knowing does not mean it does not happen, we have a lot more heat related deaths in europe than in the US. I do agree that they look somewhat ugly but then we can just spec into making them stick out less/blend in more. I've never seen anyone trying to color match it to the building for ex.

Yes, all those things are bad and most should be illegal. Whats your point?

My point is that it is quite common for people to deny risks for whatever silly reasons. And in Europe it is quite common to deny heat risks, because AC systems are considered ugly.

disinterest, as misguided as it may be, is not a crusade The real crisis is energy bc the idiots in germany decommissioned all their nuclear just in time for war with russia
