We’ve been pushed that way for the last 40 years. We CAN be kind, compassionate and empathetic. Things that Jesus taught. Make America Great Again? How about 1974-76? We taxed the wealthy, No social media rage porn, shared a bicentennial, and weren’t making ourselves choke on our own waste.

Amyet during that timeframe there was just as much racism, misogyny & asinine people, as there is now. They may have been quieter for a few years but they were always there. My grandparents and parents were alive in the timeframe you're referring to, and they were not good people, which was common.

The difference between now and then is that people back then would tend to hide their racism, homophobia, etc. because there were too many others who might slap the snot out of them. They never knew who it was safe to be themselves around. Today trump made it ok to be a total jerk. He celebrates it.

Growing up gay in the late 90s proved to me that CJ is correct about this barbarism having always held sway over the American right (especially after it married itself to evangelicals). But Jones is also correct that Christianity is far from the monolith it’s portrayed as here. I had to learn that.

Back then, all anyone had to do was apply the old test of watching how people treated the powerless among them. Gay people had no power and barely any places to call their own. And evangelicals teed off on them like conquistadors on unarmed native villagers. The cruelty was always their point.
