Hmmm i had a folding knife that could be sprung with a quick flick of the lock mechanism with serating near the base of the blade. Getting a good one that doesn't snag while folded is good for self defense. Serating is just so much better than super sharp for longer term punishment.
In my experience (accidentally cutting through the full length of my thumb's nail bed with a new box cutter) sharp blades lead to easy cuts but quicker healing with less likelihood of scaring and infection. It's why serated blades are better punishment against instigators when used in self def.

This is a great way for an officer to take a bullet or blade from the individual or a passerby that sees essentially threatening situation occur. Lack of uniforms or indication of law enforcement affiliation is a quick way for a person to meet the statute of "self defense"
MA has a pretty different set of self-defense laws than most places. You can even get into trouble here if you use a gun to defend yourself against someone who breaks into your home.
It's a misconception that more strict self-defense laws actually reduces it from being used. People are simple minded in tense or dire situations. They act without thinking or just know they can use lethal force but not when.
