We’re not books but we went from not having a newspaper to being one of the most subscribed to newspapers in America in less than a year, and our social media conversion numbers are attributable to Bluesky by a good plurality.

Dude. I used to read your printed rag every week, in the Lakeshore Dorms, UW-Madison. Circa 1987-8
I did buy a book l saw on here (indie author, not famous). One thing, tho. I posted a pic on the author's page & she didn't even so much as "like" it, so, once l do get around to reading it, not terribly inclined to take the time to review. If someone bought my book, l'd be floating.
Does she have any evidence that her presence *anywhere* leads to book sales?
If that's the only reason you're here maybe you should bounce.
🥳
Bkuesky do you like nu metal
@eve6.bsky.social would tell you we like alternative rock here.
Eve 6 is to cowardly to follow me back here
Cowardly 🤨 hmmm, maybe it's your approach js idk
Eve 6 and I have a long, storied history
Ironically its because you guys suck at satire and are better than everyone else on the planet at doing real, hard hitting news.
Is @lbmcgrath.bsky.social aware bluesky isnt an airport?
fwiw I subscribed to the physical newspaper and only knew it existed from Bluesky.
I get almost 90% of the traffic to my Etsy store from Bluesky
I think most of us are tired of your satire coming true, so we're getting print proof so we can be sure we're just not slowly going nucking futz! I mean honestly, why do so many of your parodies turn into reality lately?
So Laura's just here to sell books? Then no one will miss her when she "bounces"...
Count me amongst the BlueSky Onionati
Fun story about my love affair with the onion. I was 16 and visiting my big sis in Madison at UW. This Point - Counter Point got me obsessed. When I saw print was coming back I had to act. TY for keeping this alive we need it more than ever. theonion.com/it-was-then-...
I've checked books out from the public library which I heard about on Bluesky, but these days I try the public library first as I have no spaces left to keep books (although I still do buy one from time to time if the library doesn't have it OR if I read the library copy and then want my own copy.
I subscribed to The Onion newspaper because of Bluesky. I had no clue you could get a physical copy until I saw it on here. I've also bought books because of recommendations on here. Most recently Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States".
I bought When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill and They Called Us Enemy by George Takei because I read about them on Bluesky.
@lbmcgrath.bsky.social oh ye of little faith. you DO know that even today THE most important source of advertising is word of mouth and personal anecdote yes? now apply that to social media.
I’ve ordered at least 2 maybe 3 books because of Bluesky posts alone. In last 2 months.
Why threaten, just do it.
"the only reason I have social media is to shill my books" really isn't the book-selling post she thinks it is. If you don't want to do this, no one's forcing you, lady. Buy some adds on X to sell to Nazis and go have a nap.
She's getting more attention this way.
Yeah but it’s negative. I don’t want to read anything by someone who posts like this 😅
If someone creates an account just to pimp a product, I think people sniff that out and avoid them. Social media is about engaging with people, not just posting ads.
Hear me out: A book compiling the top ___ Onion headlines with the backstory from the headline writer
A lot of that is due to The Onion reporting news stories before they happen though.
Oh that's awesome
Personally, Bluesky is the reason I subscribed to the physical Onion this year.
More anecdata: I have purchased 3 gift subs to The Onion after seeing Bluesky posts from you or The Onion
Thanks for that idea, there are a few folks I am going to do this for!
🙋♀️🙋♀️
i bought a book yesterday because i read about it here
Being good at getting exposure via Blusky is a skill. It's not random, and some folks are not good at it.
'Met' John Scalzi on Bsky, 4 books in so far
I love blocking accounts that are on here just complaining about blue Sky. "I'm about to bounce"? Just leave. clearsky.app/lbmcgrath.bs...
if we achieve nothing else
i just bought a board game because of bluesky
I bought 'If the Stars Are Lit' by Sara K Ellis (which is hope to read this weekend)
Cancelled WAPO and subscribed to The Onion. Got my first issue today.
I subscribed to the Guardian because I kept seeing posts with articles from The Guardian on BlueSky. I doubt I would have otherwise.
Best daily, by the way!
I read "Three Miles Down" by Harry Turtledove after I saw his postings here.
You're engaged member of the community and come across as authentic so either well done Onion social media team or you're not only here to sell papers. Or if sales drop will we get "I'm not selling papers here, don't like it, might bounce"? 😀
My YA novel has earned a few awards, but I've seen little action over on my author page. Just asked my son his opinion of TikTok's potential for book awareness this morning.
Just bought The Heat Will Kill You First, The Green Roasting Tin, and the first two volumes of The Book of Dust on recommendations I read on Bsky. But those are recommendations from people I follow, not from a Bsky book club.
I know @kashana.bsky.social has a new book out (that I plan on getting). Any insight on how this platform may be helping your efforts?
* @theonion.com isn’t books, YET. Even if just bound compendiums of a year’s best work, I wonder if there may be latent markets for refined, longer-form satiric periodicals responsive to the comedic tastes of our tragicomic era? Also: congratulations on that success! Seems to me you all earned it.
We're workin' on it!
I have the "our dumb century" book... (My precious...)
I still have my OG Onion compendium from way back. The moon landing one is a classic.
I want a really nice high quality print of that one. I know I can make a bootleg one, but I'm *NICE*.
I have a copy of Our Dumb Century floating around my house somewhere.
You used to be books!
Several over the past year and when I buy its 2-3 every time.
I have! Reading “On Tyranny” now.
"Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America" Michael Harriot - 2023 Only learned about it on Bluesky - I've never seen it mentioned on Facebook.
I got my brother a subscription to the @theonion.com due to @bsky.app That’s 99 bucks.
💪 BlueSky 💪
I bought The Onion because of posts here that it was buying infowars. I bought The Power Broker because a Blueskyer told me about the podcast. Surely I’ve bought at least 4 or 5 more, and got many more than that from my library from bluesky recommendations.
Related thread: bsky.app/profile/char...
This is the best dead social network that is dying and no one uses.
The Onion is amazing. I hope you’re blasting it with the grans. That was one of my favorite stories.
Sky is full of books and authors and I’ve never been tempted to read as much as I have on here!
I've seen posts where people skeet a book they've read, and I've downloaded the titles as audiobooks -- several times. The posts were not promos for the books, just casual mentions.
I have bought at least 2 I can remember, and routinely repost book announcements from authors I follow. I mean, all my money is going toward a Rose Garden ballroom, so funds are limited.
Bringing print back is the best part. Much respect.
Maybe the secret is to not treat a social media platform like it exists simply to get people to buy your product?
Thank you for saying this. I was handing out invites back in the day and it was so frustrating seeing people drag their feet moving here when I was immediately noticing more engagement.
The Onion isn't books, but it has published several.
🏆
I would gladly pay $20 a month for a non-monetized discussion site.
I bought Nexus by Novak Noah Harari because it was mentioned on my timeline. A wonderful, important read for everyone.
I have found authors which led me to their books. Bluesky is full of creative intelligent people.
I think that was a complaint about having to create content on social media. Work or don’t I guess.
No they are complaining about having to engage with readers not just post their book promo and bounce.
Is it worth anything to an author to sell audiobook licenses to my state library system’s Libby so I can listen to their book, be amazed by it and tell my friends?
Not really the point here but the Onion books were the best. Any plans to publish new ones?
American Stupidity Marches Forward would be a good title
Best paper I’ve ever owned. I mean paper in general not just newspaper
Ive bought books because I heard about them here on Bluesky. Not sure why she's saying this regardless - looking back at her posts, she clearly states shes never published anything.
I think shes a tourist shit poster given how she posts.
Please reprint in its original format The Onion’s “Our dumb Century”. Is a masterpiece that should be in every home library.
You are also constantly interacting and sharing information, boosting other people. And I think that makes a difference if someone is here just to promote something and they don't interact in the community, they're not going to get a lot of traction and this isn't the place for them.
I'm a proud Onion subscriber (although I usually read only the headlines: they're funny enough!).
I got a subscription for my dad solely because of the content from you all I’ve seen on BlueSky!
No sales from direct posts. I appealed for library recommendations several days ago and am waiting to see if they work. www.amazon.com/dp/B0DBG5KM1G
Just like Destiny’s Child said, “I’m a subscriber I ain’t gon give up”
I ended up subscribing to the New Yorker and Wired because of seeing articles shared by the author on @bsky.app
I've bought five, but not because someone was promoting it. Just in conversation with someone who recommended something (that they did not write).
I just got my first onion newspaper. I love it!!
Congratulations! 👏
Supporting evidence: I just subscribed to the print edition because of this post.
I subscribed because of your posting in particular tbh
I sent a gift subscription to a case manager at an elder facility for their enjoyment. I imagine it will be passed around the residents like a cookie tray 😃
Honestly, I'm so tired of ads on FB and Insta and other social media, I'm relieved that Bluesky doesn't focus on selling. I follow people who educate me and entertain me.
I’ve bought several books after seeing them touted in bsky.
Maybe it's the content of said book, and not necessarily the people that might potentially buy that book.
I think the difference is if you market a book on Twitter, you’re shoveling your work in front of subliterate Nazis and ghost accounts, AND the deck is stacked against you algorithmically. Those problems don’t exist here.
Like automatically being forced to follow Elon..🤷♀️
Just saying. Didn't look to see what it was about.
Why are people only here to sell things? Maybe she shouldn't be here if that's her only goal. Remember when social media was social media?
I hate these grumpy flounce posts. If i don't get at least five likes, I'm going to bounce. 🙄
Is bounce the new modern slang for skedaddle, or vamoose?
Shuffle off to Buffalo, even.
Yes, a bookstore in Chicago posted they had no sales one day. Next thing you know it, everybody is there buying books and ordering online. I ordered Nickel Boys. Great book.
Man I feel old because I remember back when The Onion was in print and free every week with some sweet coupons for subs in Madison, WI.
I bought The Actual Star by Monica Byrne just because of Bsky.
I don’t like posts that are essentially asking people to beg the OP to stay on bluesky. If you don’t enjoy it, then leave! 🤷♀️
I’ve purchased 2 books in the past month and subscribed to The Onion newspaper. All from BlueSky
I’ve bought books based on seeing the author post here. Scalzi, and the guy who wrote A Heart to Build a Home in. Despite following book Sky I don’t get many author posts. Oh, and Seanan Maguire (sorry if I butchered the spelling). I already had read books by both Scalzi and Seanan.
We have some overlap. Peter Clines is also on here, also seems like a good human, and writes wonderful books!
Yes, Bluesky is to blame for me getting in on the ground floor.
All I really know is when here I have absolutely not even once wanted to poke my eyes out with sticks. Noticeably smaller dickhead to just folks ratio. Please keep it up. I seem to have developed an inability to watch almost any broadcast now. Well, there is the CBC. Thank dog!
Love your work.
I've read several books because of bluesky
I learned about the buyout of Onion from previous ownership group and the option for an in print paper on Bluesky. I bought the holiday price yearlong subscription for my girlfriend for Christmas and plan to gift her a subscription again this year.
Yeah I gave you $99 because of your posts.
Yes I have and I get them from the library because 💸 They just got this one in and I can't wait to read it books.google.com/books/about/...
I have purchased One Long Night by Andrea Pitzer from seeing her own posts about concentration camps, Alexander Vindman's book The Folly of Realism, and got Sarah Kendzior's Last American Road Trip from the library, I know there's more, but definitely those. People even form book clubs on here.
The ones I buy I know I'll keep (sometimes I get from the library first) but I'm a non-fiction reader and am a monster who annotates and tabs things with just a little bit of money 🤏🏻 so I have to be sure I'm adding it to my collection vs sharing it with the library 🥰
That's because BlueSky is FULL OF SICKOS
I got my dad a subscription after you told me to do that for Father's Day on here. All hail Bluesky marketing.
And your product is truly magnificent. 💚💚💚💚💚
I bought Harry Turtledove's new one 'cause of his post.
It’s a sad fact, but comedians have been one of the most reliable sources of news for a while now
People like that are insufferable. No principles just following the cash and need to be shown that doing the right thing will also gain them money... If you write well, you'll always attract word-of-mouth regardless of platform or even with no socials. Too many authors now ft influencers not writers
Tell her that monetization is not a worthy life goal and to find a new one.
This is your dude that you're all hard for?? bsky.app/profile/donm...
yeah
Happy print customer here 👋 100% thanks to seeing messaging on bluesky.
Same. Finally a pleasant treat in the mail.
“Against the wall,” by Jenn Budd and John Fugelsang’s book, “Separation of Church and Hate.” There are more… BlueSky is my “media connecting hub.”
