This is going to sound dumb, but sports is maybe supposed to be consumed this way? Porno sax gave way to Sports Shouting and in retrospect the former was clearly keeping the fabric of society together.

I’ve tried to say similar things in the past but I think the sax really is the missing piece here
I miss sane-Keith at the desk.
The streets yearn for early 00s Baseball Tonight
Only thing Bill Clinton did right
Ah, the days when this classic sketch made sense
Sweet sassy molassy
That was a line MADE for social media reactions! And yet
The porno sax to uptempo/motivational transition was also great.
You knew the football game highlights were about to get good when they started playing *that* song.
I got all my sports news from "SportsNight"
ESPN should throw exactly 1 Trillion dollars at Dan Patrick and give us the motherfucking Big Show. This is how we heal…
The Big Show would also require Olbermann, no?
Well ya, that’s not happening though so Eisen would be an adequate replacement.
Good point.
Never could forgive Eisen, Dan Patrick, Mort, etc. that just watched St.Louis get screwed in slow motion by the NFL and did nothing to cover it.
I want sports coverage from people who like and enjoy sports. For all its flaws, old school ESPN was made by people who loved sports It's part of why I like sports here, I follow people who genuinely like their sports and it is 100x more enjoyable than whatever outrage-bait ESPN is putting out now
This is so true. So much of sports is covered by knuckle dragging hotheads who really come off as hating what they cover.
Some of the best sports writing on the internet can be found @defector.com Gift link: defector.com/john-wall-wa...
I'll throw in another recommendation for Defector. It's a majority of the old Deadspin crew when they were good and they are a great combination of people that love sports but aren't too bogged down in X's and O's. They also don't take sports too seriously so they highlight the crazy moments too.
My freshman year feral roommates left the tv on espn overnight, every night, and this music is burned in to my brain despite the repeated attacks on my short term memory
We were better the old way.
If you don't know what Fluffer Tracks are Tim, I think you need to remove your last name.
We used to MAKE things in this country
Bring Back Onion Sports Network You Coward
Unwatchable for decades. If they do this right…
Early 90’s cop drama sax.
This is excellent
Mr. Onion, sir, an Onion Sports that's just earnest fun fan coverage, which I'm trying to say is the satire, k thx
A) Saxophone always comes back as an essential part of culture. B) "Why didn't you go down? Because I wanted to score." If keeping with porn sax, why not do both?
Honestly, I was expecting a Wah-pedal guitar riff, right after she asked that question.
Rich is awesome
I’m in the mood!
Doesn’t sound dumb at all. SportsCenter used to be an institution. An incredible amount of talent sat in those anchor chairs in the 80s and 90s.
Well, that and... Must See TV
That's EXACTLY how it's supposed to be.
It's gonna be another long hot night on the crime riddled streets of SportsCenter for these two hardboiled casters
📌
I mean, maybe all these far right young men are happening because they didn’t spend their extra time watching 3 rounds of the same sports center broadcast
The rise of toxic masculinity aligns with the removal of homoerotic musicality from sportball news? I'm sure it's just a coincidence.
Constant debate television has mostly made me check out on sports news programming.
I don’t care about sports at all but this made me feel happy and excited, and as if sharing the excitement of the fans. You might be onto something.
It's about sports and not focused on whatever bullcrap hot take a talking head wants to make.
the morning sportscenter that was filmed late at night and then re-aired several times in the am was a staple for me through junior high and high school. I knew so much more about players on teams on all big 4 sports back then b/c of the highlights I was "forced" to watch while waiting on my team
NFL Primetime, Sunday Night Baseball, College Gameday (when it was just fowler, corso, and herbstreit and not 4 hours), Baseball tonight, etc., College football final (even if it was Lou Holtz and Mark May) were all so much better than what we have now
Sports Shouting is an outcome of the 24 hour "news" cycle So yeah, it's not good for us or sports
we used to be a country. a proper horny country.
Are you saying that having an over-caffeinated, Gen X gym-bro shouting at his clones (with different beards) about entirely made up stories that ruin a teenagers life isn’t good for society? Just gunna leave this here for reasons www.nytimes.com/athletic/624...
Seeing some comments here and I agree. The Onion doing. Sports center like would be incredible. Yes the SAX has to be there too! 🎷
It's not supposed to be serious. You shouldn't feel bad for more than 5 minutes if your team loses. Not riot in the streets and call a guy a mother fucker in front of his kids for wearing another teams hat
This Is Sportscenter ads were about brand-building, keeping the audience feeling cool about being the audience.
i can’t stand the high octane hard rock background music bullshit …
Correct.
This is the best most accurate assessment of American society. Good looking out.
The people want to Retvrn (to sports thrills, chills, and spills)
the people demand baseball highlights set to “unbelievable” by emf
A nation cries out for a Welcome to The Big Show
Imagine if somehow Keith olbermann winds up bringing us all together. Quite the long odds if you're scoring at home.
And if you are scoring at home, congratulations
Olbermann’s readings of James Thurber set against a black void when he was protesting the management of Current TV is the closest any news network has come to producing art
We got highlights, we got lowlights, we got stories that are out of sight.
*chants* ONION SPORTS, ONION SPORTS (Now with maximum sexy saxophone)
It used to be fun, funny, and occasionally poignant. Now it’s either Debate Me, Bro! or how to pick your next parlay. Enshittification knows no bounds.
Those days of ESPN were so damn good. I truly miss it. I started hating ESPN around 2005-2008...somewhere in there
Goddamn right
My dad was a teacher with cable TV in the classroom (something the school got because of Channel 1) and since we went in early so he could do teacher stuff I’d sit at a desk half awake and watch the same episode of sportscenter multiple times. Good times.
I just want highlights!! Love this
Not dumb. Same thing happened to politics.
I would happily pay $100/yr on top of existing streaming subscriptions for an extra ESPN channel that actually behaved like this all the time (including the late night early 90s strongman competitions of course).
Magnus von Magnusson! Buses lifted, tires flipped, stones stacked, airplanes and trains pulled. Best lazy Sunday afternoon kind of hungover TV ever!
The fabric of society has never been more important -- we need this.
You are correct
Perfect phrase to use for a clip that includes an exchange of "Why didn't you go down?" "I wanted to score"
He's such a bore
Bring back those 90s style NFL highlights
that saxophone has Seen Some Things
"Why didn't you go down?", she asked, with a Red Shoes Diaries Sax going....
The dumbest part is that this could make far more bang for their buck and get far better ratings if they just did this every day. They just proved they can do this, but they won't. This is probably a fraction of the price of the big zillion-dollar contract talking heads now.
What I want to know is this: What does Stephen A. Smith think LeBron James would think of this and what would Skip Bayless say in response?
Mainlining football with Chris Berman’s fastest 3 minutes
Nah I think it's just that culture was best when we were 14-29.
The hot take hydras like Bayless, Jim Rome, Cowherd and their ilk were a dry run to our country being in the throes of Podcast Culture.
I think we were a happier more stable society when we listened to more music than podcasts.
I think we legit need more music it’s good for us
Rich has said in the past that a reason he left was the score ticker at the bottom of the screen and he thought he was being pseudo replaced.
Some modern sports media developments are good. I can listen to Sam Vecenie do a 2015 NBA re-Draft for 3 hours.
This is a pale shadow of WWS's classic "Thrill of victory. Agony of defeat..." montage which acknowledged the essential win/lose -- pleasure/pain reality of sporting events. Instead, this offers a greatest hits (some literally) reel with dully melodramatic altercations. Meat for the cheap seats.
Ahh, back in the day when I actually gave a shit about SportsCenter and watched it regularly. (Come to think of it, I tapped out when Rich Eisen left.)
