I have a brother who is ex-military police and imagines he is super religious. He would put a bullet in mine and my children’s head, weep while he did it and then use it as testimony of how he did what he was honorably called upon to do by god, Abraham style. And the congregation would pat his back.

I’m so sorry. He needs to volunteer to work with animals or something (not your responsibility to save him, though). You are right to set clear boundaries, but I acknowledge it’s still hard to watch someone you once cared about fall into a self induced abyss like that. Some day his soul will realize

It’s been happening for a long time. I became aware of it when I learned he was listening to Rush Limbaugh. He really loved the ‘Feminazi’ bit which I found disturbing and insulting. At the time I wondered if the military had ruined him.

I’m sure that played a role, but lots of soldiers/veterans did not go down that route. It seems like MAGA followers are people who avoid facing feelings of vulnerability, so they latch on to misogynistic prophets and look for enemies. At the core, they are afraid and lonely. I am so sorry.

I know you’re right about this. He is very fragile & yet he would lose his mind if you pointed out how fragile he is because he covers for it by playing the tough guy. He also put me on a pedestal so if I disagree with him it hits hard as if I’m making a personal attack on him.

Well that's fucking horrifying. I'm so sorry you've lost your brother in this way. Everyone I know who is not panicking right now thinks a majority of MAGAs will turn against Trump when their lives don't improve. They don't see the scary cultish worship and blind loyalty that's happening.

I keep wondering about my brother. Will the lightbulb ever turn on? If it does, he’ll lie about ever being a supporter because he has a very fragile ego & admitting that he’s wrong or mistaken would break it. He once admitted I was wrong for not telling him he was about to make a mistake…

(I did tell him & he got so mad at me that he yelled at me on the phone for over an hour - funny he could forget that) but that’s how he operates. If he’s wrong it’s someone else’s fault or he’s not wrong. Fox News made him worse, that program has ruined so many people.

There is definitely a type. I’ve tolerated mild abuses from him for years because he was my brother & being the oldest of 4, I always felt responsible for my younger siblings. But I recently realized that were he not my brother I wouldn’t have tolerated so much & would have walked away long ago.

Love that you came to that recognition! Now that you have your power back, you get to decide how you’ll use it.

I know someone like that as well. Ex-military and then a cop. He was abusive to my cousin while they were married and harassed for years after they were divorced. He is also a fundamentalist. He would have no qualms about shooting anyone.

I hate to say it but he low-key stalked his exes. And he has more than one ex. I feel sorry for his current wife. She backed out of the wedding but he somehow got her to reconsider months later. She’s not happy but her family doesn’t believe in divorce so she’s stuck. He treats her like a slave.

Truly, that sounds like a mental illness living in a cult
