Dragonflies and their ancestors have a long evolutionary history, dating back over 300 million years. They are considered some of the earliest insects with wings. Some researchers indicate their evolution spans approximately 400 million years. Fossils of dragonfly-like insects, sometimes called griffinflies or meganisopterans, found in Upper Carboniferous rocks are around 325 million years old. These ancient relatives, like Meganeura, were giants compared to modern dragonflies, with wingspans of up to 2.5 feet (75 cm). True dragonflies, belonging to the infraorder Anisoptera, first appeared during the Early Jurassic period.
