school shootings aren’t that big of a problem. 20k kids die DAILY from simple lack of access to fresh water. fewer than 5k die PER YEAR in the usa from mass shootings. if you care about the lives of children there is plenty of low hanging fruit that doesn’t involve rendering millions vulnerable.
They're a big problem because they change your culture. They're a big problem because they traumatize more than just those who directly suffer from it. They're a big problem because it's preventable. You're exemplifying why nobody thinks the US is a beacon of benevolent morality.
i don’t agree. i think the root problem is the media culture. it turns tiny things that are rare into huge memes that overshadow real places for societal improvement. case in point: tobacco kills daily in the us 7x as many as the opioid “crisis”. but that’s not news. emotional decisionmaking.

I think they're trying to compare the US, which claims to be a (so-called, I'm aware of the problems of this terminology) first-world country with, uh, other first-world countries. Where yes, there is gun violence, but nobody asks schools here in NL to buy bullet-proof desks.
americans don’t need bullet proof desks any more than dutch people do. it’s simple media-based fear mongering. you’re twice as likely to die in a car crash, nationwide. if you’re not in six impoverished high-crime counties where the majority of murders happen (not in schools btw), it is like 50x.
Aren't firearm injuries for kids (kids=up to age 19) #2 after cars? That's still messed up (not per se in schools, that ratong is just in general from the CDC)
#1 actually. it’s because america is actually quite safe generally speaking. even the #1 isn’t that big in real numbers, and that includes all gun deaths (suicides included)

i think it is just because we don’t have much mortality at these ages. when people are 15+ they start riding in cars with teenage drivers, or are teenage drivers themselves. absolute numbers tell a better story than rankings

So to be clear I'm thinking the people involved in this thread are Americans who are not per se worried about, say, kids in Yemen dying of cholera. I think because of expectations, mostly.
Like, "why should daily school shootings be the norm in the US when it's not in France?" kinda thing. (the answer is availability. There are simply more guns lying around in some places compared to other places. The people in Europe aren't nicer or anythin, they just have to use knives etc instead)
