I think the old system made it too hard for new names to punch through but this new one struggles to retain talent/build "stars".

I think it struggles with "stars" in general, Nathan Steuer is a recent example. It doesn't take much to fall off the wagon, not to mention the constant need for data and decklists. I suspect Ian Robb will be similar, and that one will sting a lot more due to his association with Pokémon.
