Fraud is fraud, there’s no disagreement there. But penalties for fraud should be paid, and equal treatment should apply across the board. If one person is fired for misconduct, the same standard should apply to the other. Accountability has to be consistent, otherwise justice means nothing.

I agree, but your comments implicitly assume Cook committed fraud. That's a HUGE assumption. For starters, if her lenders knew all the facts, there is no fraud. Second, loan officers usually ask questions and fill in the forms - so, Cook herself may not have checked the boxes.

Yes. And I think the courts will too. There is also the question of HOW the investigation began. Did the government just go looking for dirt on her - which is how it seems? An investigation started without a predicate can be challenged in court and have evidence collected excluded from prosecution.
