People constantly cite the Pickett-Trimble-Pettigrew assault on July 3rd, but Grant's initial tenure with the AOP was basically just "oops, all Fredericksburgs" for a month straight.

One of the sadder aspects of this is that Meade is basically in a state of borderline mental breakdown by June-July of 1864 caused in part due to the stress of the colossal losses among the men and leadership of the AOP caused by Grant.
Sure perhaps the Overland campaign could have been conducted more elegantly, but Lincoln had 3 years to find that general and ended up saying "fuck it" let's bring in the brawler
Also, if Grant was so incompetent at battle in the overland campaign, he surely was at least passable at Maneuver
The weirdest potential alternative history version of ACW is one in which Grant stays in the West, Meade turtles up in front of DC, and Grant and Sherman take Richmond from the South
Even granting that for the sake of arguement, Lee was demonstrably incapable of Grant's western campaign that made the Rebel defeat inevitable by kicking in the door to invade the deep south.
Not really, Grant outmaneuvered Lee and forced him into being denied his great wonder-strokes from previous generals trying to maneuver him into a fight and Pikachu-facing when they got it. It was not elegant, but it worked. Lee's elegance killed one in four Confederate soldiers.
