I was a loadmaster on C-17s as was my husband. Here is a link to a DOD chart that shows hourly rates for military aircraft. It's still a huge waste of money to use military aircraft instead of charters, but the cost is no where near as reported for the C-130E. comptroller.defense.gov/Portals/45/d...
The extra cost is due to Mexico refusing permission to use their airspace, so the planes have to take much longer routes to circumvent that space. More miles, more hours, more fuel.
I didn't realize you had direct experience in the Air Force flying the aircraft discussed. The flight to Mexico never took off. The two C-17s that flew to Guatemala would only incur a few hours of additional flight if taking an alternate route, which happens quite often. It did not cost $850,00+
And Columbia just denied U.S. access to its airspace. Another route cut off.

Everything done with a military plane is more expensive than the commercial air flight. From equipment, to maintenance, to fuel, to staff, to airport, to air traffic contorl. Every part of that process costs more bc it's classified, done with specialized equipment & run by highly trained personnel.

From this, C-17 is $16+k per hour. A C-130J is less than $6,500 per hour. A C-130 is a turboprop airplane. Propellers. It is an obvious error when this is listed as more costly to fly than the C-17 (a massive jet). The other question is the Customs and Immigration flight figure also per hour?

per google... C-17 is one of the most fuel-intnesive aircraft in the air force, and it costs about $24K per hour to operate (not 16k). and there MANY generations of C-130s. Different technology alone might account for a HUGE range of operating cost differences, despite all being turboprop planes.
Seems pretty straightforward to me. I got the SAME numbers from my engineer with an MBA husband—trust him more than some random person giving trump a pass!

It’s been a lot of years since I had to submit data for USAF CPFH calculations. I didn’t find a regulation stating how to calculate but this was from a 2015 Rand Corp paper. I assume it’s pretty much the same. CPFH allows DoD to charge other agencies and compare with commercial transport cost.
It’s due to Mexico denying use of their airspace, so flights have to circumvent it which causes them much longer routes. I’ll link a TikTok that explains it really well.

Not really because same restrictions apply. Domestic (or private) airlines must abide by same international laws.
Military planes cost more to operate. They’re not built for efficiency but for war. Airlines do everything to cut costs. Military planes are older, have specialized mx and crews have to be trained in war fighting. The military often leases out civilian flights to move troops because it’s cheaper.
That was my instinct. All my friends are obsessed with military aviation and their crews and super specialty.
You have good instinct and basic common sense. Sure you can use them as training flights, but are they “training” for the combat missions they’re supposed to be ready for? Flying into civilian airports and following federal passenger dictates for detainees isn’t necessarily the training they need.
Every squadron and every pilot require training hours. These flights will be expensed as training flights and therefore don’t increase the operating costs of the squadrons conducting the flights.
And if they are under orders to conduct a mission, it’s not training and the “costs” will be funded by some other pot of money.

These seem complete and comparable. Fuel is less now but other costs likely somewhat higher, so IDK. A 12 hr roundtrip in a C-130 would be <$80,000. The same flight time (which obviously would extend further) would be just under $200,000 in the C-17. Both of these are govt agency rates.
