The number of civil servants is about the same today as it was in 1980. The population of the U.S. has increased ~49% since 1980. If anything, there should be more Feds to serve the needs of the increased population. Dismantling government only makes America weak—especially the Intel Community.
The IRS in particular has been vilified by Republicans at least since the 1980s. But defunding the IRS has made it ever easier for the wealthy to escape paying taxes. www.brookings.edu/articles/hou...
The civil service has been *severely* understaffed for a long time - the only reason they've been as effective as they have been is that the IT revolution started paying serious dividends at almost exactly the same time as the staffing level stagnation kicked in.

Funny how the people actually making the country run get smeared, while the billionaires rigging the system get praised as "job creators." Propaganda is one hell of a drug.
I will never understand the distrust for public servants and the government coming from the same folks who totally trust private industry. It's usually complaonts the gov is just out for you money, as if the private sector isn't fully transparent about that being their sole goal
Earning salaries below market rates….
We do (usually) enjoy a better retirement plan and more job protections than most non-union private sector workers —but that’s an argument for more worker protections in the private sector!
And they are generally underpaid, sometimes substantially, compared to what they could make in the private sector. When you want to address excessive spending, this is not where you should look.
