We got a Costco membership for the first time in our lives today. They asked why & I said because treat your workers well, you value diversity, & you didn’t cave in to authoritarian demands. He said: “We’ve been getting lots of folks saying that, thanks for joining.” Who needs a gallon of ketchup?

Especially their vanilla extract! At one point, that 16 oz. bottle was $24. Recently, it went down to $10.99. I bought a couple to store. We live in a rural area with the nearest Costco 40 miles away and the nearest grocery store nearly 20 miles away, so stocking our pantry this way is essential.

There are things to buy from Costco if you have substantial fridge spaces and/or teenagers who go through a lot of food: Granola/protein bars, much cheaper than anywhere else; Chobani yogurts, ditto; store brand plain greek yogurt v.g.; Dave's bread (30% cheaper); hummus; sardines. Unique things? /1

The salmon burgers are great, as are the soup dumplings, both in the freezer section; they have some unique things like Portuguese custard tarts in the freezer section, and good deals on furniture sometimes. Things I've found OK but overrated (bc I live v close to a TJs): olive oil, frozen fish.

If you buy a lot of ground beef, I like to section it out into ~1 pound bags. Flatten and freeze what you aren't using, that way the quick thaw in some cold water in about 15 minutes for use. The rotisserie chicken is 🔥 and the precooked shredded chicken is A+ for chicken salad.

They're packed as a sealed bag of fresh noodles and a bag of pork-and-spice "sauce" to heat up. No instant powder stuff here. The portion size is a bit small, in my opinion, but they are well spiced and delicious. I'm not a fan of the packaging waste, and they're a bit pricy, but otherwise great.

Better than Bouillon (reduced sodium) Whole black peppercorns. Sometimes I will get meat and freeze it, but we’re now a 3 person household. Produce and meat from there doesn’t get used as rapidly as when I had two young kids plowing through produce at breakneck speeds. 😂

Here’s a hack: sameday.costco.com will give you a pretty good idea of your store’s inventory. They use instacart, so if you’re not okay with that, you’re just using it as inventory management. If you have more than one nearby, you can put in a second address that’s near the one that’s further. 1/2

feb 16, 2025, 4:15 am • 0 0 • view
avatar
CZEdwards @czedwards.bsky.social

The sameday prices are a little higher, but good for estimating and you can use it to plan your trip. Weekends are when things go out of stock. Plan for Tuesdays for stuff like eggs or berries. The Sameday does not include clothing or some pharmacy stuff (like sudafed & plan B). 2/2

Buying from local farmers would really be most helpful. And it seems many people eat much more processed food than i care to. I would have to drive 35 miles one way to shop at Costco—my carbon footprint means something to me. And who are the suppliers to Costco? Does Costco screen them? 1\

Just two notes. I prefer THEOLOGY instead of philosophy. And secondly, we act, but too slowly. Ex. Eastern Mennonite U. integrated very early compared to other Virginia schools, but it wasn't till 1948. Also, too many now reflexively don't like those words, see them as "Woke."

In terms of analyzing their whole supply chain, do that with farmers before making comparisons about what would be best. Dems are so focused on excessive purity tests that they gasp at a gnat and swallow a fly. What's their take on diversity, equity and inclusion? Or do you care about that?

What does this have to do with Costco? It's not an either/or. It can be both. Do your local farmers sell toilet paper? Farmers largely vote Republican, and that means supporting policies and people I don't. If you discover otherwise in your local community go for it.

Get the 10-lb bags. When you get home, put it in the freezer for 4 days, then package it in heavy plastic [like freezer bags] and then, if possible, store it in a heavy air-tight plastic container. Weevils aren't harmful but they are gross. If you find weevils in your flour, just sift them out.

And you’re partially correct about the Costco vote: according to the company, ‘98% of shareholders voted against a proposal to review risks of its DEI programs.’ Not quite the same as “voting to keep DEI,” but arguably adjacent.

There is also a shareholder vote on the ballot at Disney to get the board to review its DEI risk; the board is urging shareholders to vote it down (as Costco’s did).

So is the meat, if you want 10 lbs of chicken breasts or a whole rack of ribs. The overall price is something to swallow hard over but the per-lb cost is quite reasonable. I usually get bone-in chicken thighs and push them straight into the freezer, then cut off a section whenever I want chicken.

feb 17, 2025, 2:41 pm • 2 0 • view

CitrineGlitters @citrineglitter.bsky.social

I need to add that the chicken comes in packages of a few lbs each, but the packages are attached to one another in a long string. Very clever of them! Keeps me from having to do all the work of repackaging the pieces, like I have to do with supermarket "family packs."

Yes, bell peppers, onions, most other veggies and many fruits. Usually anything you can find in the frozen veggie section is fair game to free if you buy fresh. Harder cheeses can usually be frozen, including shredded cheeses, but softer cheeses don’t do as well.

Can you add air to nitrogen filled tires...or can you only add nitrogen? We're 20 miles from our nearest Costco - so we haven't bought tires there. But I need tires!

feb 19, 2025, 12:04 am • 1 0 • view

Jason Shots @deepstatedm.bsky.social

The only bad thing that happens about mixing air with nitrogen is you're diluting the nitrogen and therefore reduce its effectiveness. That's it. Nitrogen is more stable than oxygen.

I’m the only one in my household who uses ketchup. I recently bought the 3 pak they sell at Costco. When I die, I’ll still have at least one full bottle of outdated ketchup.

If you buy an air fryer and 12 pounds of potatoes from Costco, then you can use all that ketchup :-)

Loved COSTCO in Australia-there in 2012. Bought a cook book to bring back to the US. Loved the food choices, but was similar in products with a few local and ethic food choices. Wish we had some of the ethnic choices at our store. Each store has unique local products not found in other locals.

Just remember the Costco rule: if you see a seasonal or special item you think you want, you had better buy it, because it will not be there the next time you come through the store!

Actually, the process was calm. Mine was a recent join too. I was not asked why nor did I offer why because a couple in front of me and I walked up to sign up at the same time and it seemed obvious. Costco was as kind as they could be. Even when checking out. Knowing nothing they were encouraging.
