i don't have a magical solution but in my view we've integrated journals into scientific careers as a proxy for quality, and we've arrived at a place where journals are a big drag on the enterprise

“Barrier too high” sounds like my original point. Readers have access. It’s just not as quick and easy as they want. I don’t have much sympathy for that - not enough to warrant implementing OA and it’s assspciated negatives and externalities.

For my generation 👩‍🦳who started accessing papers by going to the library weekly to see the latest issues and then photocopying the paper or mailing a reprint request card😱, your point is well taken but your solutions take "effort" & folks just want to click and have the paper appear on their screen
