If you only charged £300 a day over 230 days you wouldn’t hit the VAT threshold.
If they don't register, they have to swallow VAT on absolutely everything they buy, which means it's more expensive doing B2B or subbed work. Customer always has to pay VAT, so either the tradie pays, or the customer pays.
