Nova Scotia’s forest ban is a litmus test on whether you understand the founding principles of Canada and its constitution. The usual suspects are, of course, failing it badly. www.nationalobserver.com/2025/08/07/o...

I have no dog in this fight but what is causing the majority of conflagrations? It doesn't make sense to ban people from the forests if the majority of wildfires are caused by lightning, which is what I understand caused those currently burning.
I wouldn't think of Saskatchewan as being "out west" but thanks for the clarification.
They’re trying to avoid the many, many Kyles flicking a lit dart off the back of an ATV. The bad campers, the dumb kids, and people who might light fires from malice.
This is only half of the story. While people are banned from the forest, Houston's government is permitting the forestry industry to carry on business as usual (esp. on private land) and conducting activities that have immediate risk and which continue to make NS forests more susceptible to fire!
This is about a government that consistently works on behalf of industry interests, and Nova Scotians pay the price.
The Right to swing your fist ends at my nose. The flawed hypothetical State of Nature of Hobbes needs to be put to rest. For 6 million years our ancestors lived in groups of varying sizes, that is how we survived through co-operation. The Lone Individual facing the State of Nature, died
Michelle whatshername from Peterborough ranting that Houston is saying "hiking" causes wildfires. No, Michelle, it's the people that cause fires very easily during droughts. Smart outdoors people know when it's time to stay away.
Let’s give up all our civil liberties because governments won’t mitigate climate change!
Bro, it’s so dry here the reflection from windows on the crunchy grass is starting fires. Folks in the country don’t have insurance and if you light your neighbour’s house on fire and they lose everything, you’re the bad guy. Don’t you get tired of always being the bad guy?
Don’t I always get tired of thinking how government overreach can be abused? Sometimes. Do I tire of randos taking personal digs? Always.
I’m not the one who shares the same opinions as people who use confederate flags as curtains, my guy
Apologize now www.halifaxexaminer.ca/economy/natu...
I’m not your guy. I have valid concerns about the restriction of civil liberties because governments can’t get their shit together on climate change. Just because conservatives have a similar opinion doesn’t mean we arrive to them the same way. You sound ridiculous.
This is perhaps what's coming, but you should also read the article if you haven't already.
“Tim Houston is trying to prevent the sort of wildfires that caused death and destruction in his province just two years ago. To some people, though, he's just an agent of creeping climate extremism and government overreach”
Government overreach is Premiers getting into the business of municipalities, like prohibiting bike lanes that a city council has approved. I would not put this in that same category...He's trying to avoid fires...
I would and I think the courts would agree with me. If he wanted to stop fires he would stop denying climate change.
I agree with Max on this point: In Canada, our enumerated constitutional freedoms are literally preceded — and caveated — by a clause, Section 1, that makes it clear they can be limited if they interfere with the rights and freedoms of others.
But I agree with you that we are pathetically underperforming when it comes to mitigating climate change. I worry about it every single day.
"The irony of invoking a poem by Dylan Thomas, an avowed anti-fascist who made common cause with the communists of his time, is surely lost on the homeschooled Parker. But..."
Fred DeLorey, conservative, takes down National Post columnist's opposition to this ban.
Can't access article, but I agree with ban. Can't say what the cons angle is here (they're largely climate chg deniers!) I've been hiking almost daily since retired 2 years ago. The amt of trash that is left behind by effing morons in the most beautiful places in NS is obscene. Cig butts too! Why??
What it is is a sad reflection on the reality that people cant simply be trusted to use their heads and behave. Thats it and thats all. People are always behaving like morons.
Not sure why, but although I'm a subscriber I can't get into the article. It also recognizes that I'm logged in.
Yay, I managed to get in. Had to log out and log back in.
"Unfortunately, there is a segment in society — ... — that views any call for sacrifice on behalf of a common good as a form of creeping totalitarianism." Such action IS authoritarian! So long as the public perceives the action as reasonable and necessary, it's OK. PS. Bias much?
It's literally not. It's the government recognizing that not everyone can be trusted to do the right thing without TEMPORARILY mandating it. There's always ALWAYS a subset of the population that feel entitled to do whatever they want, regardless of the outcome of their actions.
And these days there seem to b no consequences to those actions either
That seems to be a recurring comment. Fines have been issued?
Fines are no longer enough
Fair. Personally, dish more of them at max, out, and you'll see a change. 25,000 is not a small amount of money.
No, it isn't. But I'd rather see jail time
Actually, check that. I'd rather see a public naming and shaming of this person or persons nationwide; run them out of town, province, country, etc. But THAT is not likely to happen unfortunately.
If they are charged, does it not become public? And yes, jails are busy, so no, unless it's an arsen, you won't see jail time. Far too often, we impose fines and don't follow through. So they lose their teeth.
I'm aware what the law IS, doesn't change it from what I want to see
You’ve enjoyed the tolerance of your communities for a long time now. What happens when your consistent anti social behaviour puts your neighbours in danger? What happens to you then.
You get banned from the woods!
