Haven't read the piece but I do remember in my Paste days publishing a pan of the latest Elle King record. Her publicist emailed me insisting that we talk about the review. Said that unless we got something factually wrong, there was nothing to talk about.

I panned a Pete Doherty solo record for Consequence Of Sound and got harassed by his fans for MONTHS. All over the guy from the Libertines! Imagine the vitriol sent toward someone panning a pop star these days. I miss writing negative reviews but I do not miss the endless blowback.
And I see now that the New Yorker piece references that byline-less review.
Yeah the negative review I wrote for a Jeff Beck album for that same site resulted in weeks of the most hilarious anger from his fans. Says it all that Paste had to publish a negative review of Taylor Swift's last album sans byline.
I panned a Cold War Kids record for you and got zero feedback for it, which is honestly funny. No one even cared enough to say “cmon, they’re nice guys.”
