I think it started with Reagan the "pull yourself up by your boot straps" ideology. Capitalism with Reagan really took off. Then came Clinton and NAFTA, which was a good idea but poorly managed. We became a sink or swim, every man woman and child for themselves society.

Families separated for jobs and, because of distance, became indifferent to the needs of others. This is a simple answer that sounds simple, but that was a complex ?? You could write a book on it.
