🧵There’s a lot of people out there saying that measles is being brought to the US by immigrants, specifically undocumented immigrants crossing the southern border. Let’s talk about measles and migration. ✈️ TL:DR: Measles in the US comes from outbreaks started by unvaccinated traveling Americans.

I remember reading years ago that immigrants are usually more vaccinated than citizens. Wonder if it was true, or has become true.

From 2020 to 2024 there were 338 US measles cases reported to CDC. 27% were in travelers, 69% were in people exposed to that traveler (4% source unknown). 63% of infected travelers were US residents, 37% were foreign visitors. 90% of the US travelers were unvaccinated or had unknown immunity.

Where did the infected travelers get measles? 52% from Eastern Mediterranean, 26% from Africa, 12% from Europe, 12% from Southeast Asia. Only 2% from the Americas.

Measles outbreaks in the US don’t come from documented or undocumented immigrants crossing the Southern border. They come from unvaccinated US travelers bringing it back to unvaccinated communities. Stricter immigrant border control will have no impact on measles coming from traveling US citizens.

So how do we control measles? Firstly, AMERICAN TRAVELERS should make sure they are vaccinated against measles if they are going to an area with measles outbreaks. If US travelers don’t pick measles up, they can’t bring it back. Secondly, AMERICAN RESIDENTS inside the US need to be vaccinated.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses known to man. On average, 1 infected person will infect 12-18 others. It only takes 1 infected traveler entering an unvaccinated community to cause a massive outbreak. If members of a community are vaccinated, they will not get infected even when exposed

If enough members of the community are vaccinated (≥95%) they will block the spread of measles to non-immune individuals like young babies and immunocompromised people. In 2024, Europe had 127,350 measles cases. This is where we are headed if we do not get measles vaccination rates back up.
