I realize that this is where we are in biomedical research in many ways and less senior folks have more at stake in speaking out, but it would be good to get some perspectives from more folks who actually ARE the future of biomedical research rather than just speaking on its behalf. 2/2

You are correct about what is at stake for early career, bipoc, lgbtq, women, etc for speaking ut. But the privilege afforded the interviewees, since they could all get jobs in a msec in the EU, gives them the ability to speak out, where others cannot. it's good that they did. and thanks to you too!

I get this, but there is a distorting factor that others think that this is all about these senior folks. Trust me, I am not saying standing up and taking risks is easy. It isn't. Everyone circumstances are different. But there are costs either way.

yeah. i get that too. i worry to no end about the junior faculty in our department (some visa holders who also can't speak up) and our trainees.... the lost generation - first covid, now this.

One of my grantees is a gay, female person of color who has been trying to get coverage for her grant termination with limited success. Some of this is on who the media chooses to cover and feature.

Exactly this. Mid-40s faculty here (white/cis tho). I'm looking at the 15yrs from my early 40s (COVID) to my late 50s (recovering from whatever this will be) with sadness. Our uni leaders are preserving what they can today at the expense of tomorrow. The cruelty of that is hard to see.

The basic science faculty at a medical school are 35% female. Columbia is below this national average by quite a bit. Maybe 10% under. They also quoted several Nobel Laureates. Only 6% of those are female. Yes, almost all the folks they quoted will all be inactive in a decade's time. 1/

Thinking about where biomedical research will be in another decade is an interesting exercise. Even excepting the occurrences in the past six months, the ongoing trends suggest things will be very different. 2/2
