Anyone who says that NATO is “past it” as an idea clearly hasn’t been paying attention for the last three Years and should probably ask Finland and Sweden why they just joined, after 80 Years of determined neutrality ? !

Equally, anyone who hasn’t noticed Trump and Hegseth and their penchant for stupidity & unreliability hasn’t been paying attention. Where else were Finland / Sweden to turn? Any port in a storm.

Yes, and they probably want to leave NATO, - so let's not do them the favour of destroying NATO for them, lets make those Corrupt, ignorant Fuckwits do it themselves !

Sounds like you agree with Zack and GPEW policy, in main part. NATO needs reform or replacement. The only real question is how and what triggers it. IMO GPEW is right to stimulate this much needed debate.

No I don't, and I don't trust Zack or his mate 'Magic Grandpa' with our NATO Membership. The point of NATO is that it's a rock solid commitment to defend each other against, let's face it, Russian attack, - so the moment you start adding 'Terms & Conditions' to that

commitment, you create opportunities for a scumbag like Putin to get around those T's&C's and so get away with it. No Thanks.

It's not "rock solid" though it is it. The USA is in bed with Russia and has a dementing leader, who sees no value in NATO in his more lucid moments. There is no guarantee that the USA will fulfill its undertaking to defend other members. Their duplicity is evident in their treatment of Ukraine

No, but leaving now would be a bit like burning your house down so you don't have to renew your home insurance ? Yes, if Russia attacked, Trump might not help, but if we had left NATO already, then Russia attacking us would be ENTIRELY our own fault, - we couldn't even blame that Fat orange Slob !

If, if, if... we haven't left Nato, have we so that's irrelevant. What is relevant is deciding how we go forward. The status quo is no longer holding good.

Yes, but reforming it to adapt it to this potentially massively different circumstance is far better than ‘leaving’ which appears to be what Zack would like to do.

Seems you are determined to disagree by standing outside the tent, pissing in. Fair enough, but as a thought, why not join GPEW and join the relevant policy group? I’m sure they would welcome your insight and challenge. Policy doesn’t develop in a vacuum. We live in a fast changing world. 👍

You're putting a lot of faith in the American's willingness to uphold Article 5. Good luck with that.

I put more faith in 'someone' in the US honouring Article 5 than I trust Putin not to attack us if we left NATO. Who do YOU trust more ? An American Military that is sworn to uphold their Constitution (NOT their President), or that short Russian Fucker who Bombs Schools ?

The US Constitution has bugger-all to do with the US living up to it's NATO commitments.

Where, in the Constitution, does it compel the US government to respect their NATO commitment and moreover, what could NATO members do about it if a US government refuses to do so?

The USA aren’t coming to rescue Europe from Russian expansionism, most (all?) of which will be fought in the grey zone beneath an Art5 trigger. Trump policy is evidently to diminish EU by distracting it with an emboldened Russia, witness Ukraine. 1/2

GreenerFutures @greenerfutures.bsky.social

So I place limited faith in Art5 beyond European nations who would, even collectively, struggle to match Ru already in a wartime economy & we have no real independent ☢️ cap. EU will take +10y to scale up, having heavily cashed in the ‘peace dividend’. But this is the point; it needs debating. 2/2

If Article 5 is a Sack of Shit, then WHY hasn't Putin attacked any NATO Countries ? What's stopping him ? Or is he just a lovely, lovely bloke, who has been sorely misunderstood, just because he's Murdered a few tens of thousands of Ukrainians, in his illegal War ?

Is a good challenge and, strategically, I suspect he’s continually pushing at the edges and seeing what he can get away with. I didn’t say Art5 is worthless, I said I’m not sure I trust USA to jump in in things kicked off in Europe.
