My niece (now 34) says she can't watch anything that refers to Katrina and is boycotting all the related events and anything on TV that's related. In her words, "I lived it. I don't want to see anything about it again."

I’m just 2 years younger- it’s a weird survivor’s guilt for me. I lived it, but not as an adult. I tell myself that my patients deserve my understanding- beyond that of a tween victim. It’s a very weird intersection.

I hope they also give you the grace of patience and understanding that your life was indelibly changed. It's a strange shared trauma that everyone experienced in a highly personal way. (I was living out of state 2000-2007 and watched with horror from a distance.)
