I’ve spent enough time in Boston that Seattle doesn’t even register as weird to me. The street design is the absolute worst and the drivers are, too. I’ve driven across the US, and Boston is the one city I outright refuse to drive in.

Pretty sure the OG Kelley Square is where my friend and I got stuck until a woman took pity on us and literally pulled into the middle of traffic to shield us then rolled her window down and screamed “GO!” bsky.app/profile/cair...
I’m just glad I’m not the only one with a memory of that intersection seared into their brain
Pretty sure anyone who’s survived it has it burned upon their brain
That one looks to be in Worcester Mass, but it'd fit right in with some fun Boston area intersections: www.google.com/maps/place/W...
Yes, it is. I still stand by what I said, because that’s part of the problem - it’s not just Boston, it’s a lot of MA.
I went to school in that (Boston) area and I always enjoyed the traffic circle right outside campus that had multiple lights *inside* the circle: www.google.com/maps/@42.400...
Worst intersection I’ve ever seen was in Worcester. It’s like two adjoined plazas with roads in a figure eight around it, like 5-7 more roads connecting to it, and not a traffic light to be found. Just complete chaos.
That might be the one I was thinking of. And that’s the thing — it’s not just Boston proper, it’s everything around it, too.
I’ve been trying to recall this intersection for like five years, finally found it. Kelley Square and woe to the unsuspecting. I guess they’ve updated it and I’d love to interview the traffic engineer responsible for that design. First is old second is new.
lol yep been there, horrid
My brother got married in Vermont and my wife, me and our first kid had to fly into Boston. This was me by the time we got to the hotel.
Very familiar with that experience. I lived in VT for a long time, love it there. Having to fly into Boston and Boston being the closest big city was my least favorite part of living there.
Worst city ive ever driven in hands down
Being in a car there is hell on earth
I tried to find the name of an infamous intersection where my friend and I got stuck until a woman pulled into the middle and saved us but I ended up just finding long lists of everyone debating the worst intersections
Was once in a car waiting at a red light to turn right, a taxi came up behind, passed us on the left, then turned right.
My favorite was when I saw a car bypassing traffic by driving down the bike lane
Once when crossing in a crosswalk a car honked at me angrily because they had to slow down a little bit to not hit me
Streets change names randomly, and rather than constructed on a grid, streets look more like cooked linguine noodles tossed over slippery boulders. I hated trying to drive in Seattle. Beautiful back in the 70s to 90s when we were there. i5 is perpetual traffic jam, Portland to Canada.
Not saying it doesn’t have issues! But it’s still nothing compared to Boston tbh.
I've never driven Boston but I definitely have heard it is an ugly nightmare to drive in. Do the streets change names randomly as your driving on them? That really makes it batty 😵
For a liberal city, there is absolutely no empathy for fellow (enemy) drivers.
lol. You sound like a rookie. Remember, in Boston , drive it like you stole it and absolutely no directionals to tip off anyone to your plans.
And half the streets in Seattle are just shy of totally vertical, which somehow nobody warns you about! So steep!
I grew up here so I’m just used to that 😆
My strategy for getting around Seatttle: park it, walk, bike, take a bus, just don’t drive😱
Me too! Mostly walking. My favorite though are the sidewalks that are so steep that they have little ridges to help you stay upright.
Design, lol. When my now wife moved to Boston she used to call once a week in tears. She had missed a turn and couldn't find a way back to where she was trying to go.
You don't 'figure out' your way around Boston in a car. It's more akin to gambling.
