That's because the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. And they obviously aren't good guys.

They believe they’re the good guys and they’re ok with a dictator as long as they feel aligned with said dictator. This has played out in other countries, and never goes well, but these people are not students of US history let alone world history. Stupid is as stupid does.
