Reconstruction was certainly a bad idea.

Reconstruction was a great idea. Black people were elected to office in the South and the KKK was in hiding. Once the US pulled troops out of the South after the 1876 election, Black citizens lost the right to vote for 80 years, the KKK ran amok and lynching was commonplace.

A historian on NPR years ago said that the assassinations of black politicians exceeded the rate of lynchings. To your point, I also heard the writer Stanley Crouch say on a panel that black achievement during Reconstruction can be compared to any accomplishments by any group people in history.

Nah, if Lincoln was not assassinated, he would have done things a bit “differently” than his POS VP Johnson. A man can only be pushed so far. He would have crushed The South into dust with Grant and Sherman in charge. Ahh, what could have been 🤔.

We never really finished reconstructing…it got short circuited by a little something called Jim Crow because too many former slaves were winning elections in the former Confederacy. True story.

Yep, here in Louisiana they destroyed ballots, chased the Black democratically elected to Colfax and Coushatta and killed them. No wonder they’re still geared up to imprison immigrants. We’re still a plantation-run state.

Yes thank you, my understanding is the assassinations of Black politicians throughout the South exceeded the rate of lynchings at the turn of the century. We are actually ONLY NOW in this generation returning to the level what we had achieved as blacks in America during Reconstruction.
