Iowa was a purple state relatively recently. It voted for Obama twice. I can't say why it shifted right, but I don't think people collectively decided they didn't care about their immigrant neighbors anymore. I hope to see more of them pushing back as they realize and accept that they were conned.

I would say that the anti-LGBTQIA message more so resonated with Iowans. I have a lot of family that look like the people in this video and they struggle with change/differences. Their racism does show in how they can infantilize POC, but none of them see their racism.
