It's my pet theory that the ven diagram of homophobes and misogynists is just a circle; and, as they are well aware of how they treat women, they are terrified that a man could find them attractive, decide they want them, and make them feel the same way they make their female victims feel.

My pet theory is that all of the -ism's are different versions of sexism. In all of them there is an impulse by the oppressor to feminize the oppressed.

It's so true and at the risk of oversimplification it has to do with the nature of patriarchy. Patriarchy is binary. Male, not male. Have, not have. The system doesn't leave room for nuance, therefore you must be or not be. Expand that out from theoretical to practical and you can see the effects.

Contrast this with queer theory or liberation ideology and you realize that all of our social constructs based on 1:0s create the very cages we lock ourselves in even as the natural world doesn't actually contain that many binaries.
