“OK, Boomer” just got flipped on its head. At protests across the country this past weekend, older Americans turned out in force, leading chants, waving signs and showing that resistance has no age limit. And their passion isn’t just inspiring. It might be what helps save democracy.

We literally sacrificed our older siblings to the fucking war. who, if they came home alive, were sometimes damaged beyond repair.
Can confirm. There were tons of elders at my sleepy Midwest beach town protest. Using walkers and holding signs. It was refreshing.

This may be right. While out on Saturday, I observed and mentioned to a co-protester that it appeared that most of us were older and many of the drive-by"honkers" were older, as well. Ironically, the younger Americans are going to be subjected by the 🍊🤡 policies much longer than us older peeps.

How old were the average protestors against the Vietnam War in the 1960s-70s? In their 20s? So how old would they be now? Right about the age of many of these folks now. Once an activist... always an activist.
They were alive at a time when Fascism was reviled and their parents had just given everything to defeat it.

I noticed the prevalence of oldsters at many of the earlier rallies, and was glad to see more youngsters show up. Where all these conservative boomers come from? We went to Woodstock for god's sake, we marched in Washington against Viet Nam, for unionizing farm workers, for women's rights.

At the Hands Off rally in our city a few months ago, it seemed like more than half the participants had grey hair. At the No Kings rally, finally, younger people seemed to outnumber the oldsters, though seniors were still well-represented.

I was there for No Kings, over 10,000 in Cincinnati, I went to 2 that day. I was also there for Vietnam Nam and Civil Rights in the 60’s.

Damn right! My 76-year old husband, 75-year old sister-in-law & I had our signs at a corner in Fairfax Cnty VA with about 200 others. He & I have been to countless demonstrations since the 1960s. We were both tear-gassed in Wash DC in 68 before we even met. I was 18 and in college downtown DC.

As boomers, we remember a time, not long ago, when the person who won the Oval Office would be an honorable person. We may not agree with them on everything, but we respected the office. We can’t do that anymore, we can’t respect a lawless president who only cares about himself.

Ah yes, can any of us forget Nixon and the missing minutes on the tape? There were two reasons I wouldn’t vote for Gerald Ford, the Nixon pardon and the Warren Commission report. Ford was involved with both. The only man to be our non elected VP and non elected president, all in one.
Jimmy Carter was the first President I voted for. I refused to vote for Ford because of the Nixon pardon. Odd that Ford & Carter became very good friends. Ford's son spoke at Carter's funeral reading a letter his dad wrote just for Carter's funeral. They wrote letters for each other's funeral.
It is the generation that learned they CAN control their destiny. I don't believe the younger generation has that kind of faith. But they better learn, because the alternative is tyranny.

We learned about democracy in the 1950s and 1960s, when the horrors of fascism and authoritarianism were firmly remembered by our teachers. The intentionally cruel actions of DOGE, the lack of due process, the corruption, the shear thoughtlessness - all of this makes us old people crazy.
And that's why the GOP Congress wants to kill off Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid--they want us seniors to sicken and die off. They're saying we're useless (esp. women--past menopause particularly.)

I've been protesting since I was 17 in 1968. I was raised by a career Marine officer who was a Democrat. He took me to my first protest in San Diego and said, "Never stop doing this." So I haven't.
As someone in their 70's, I've watched the USA make strides towards our nation's ideals. Yes, there is plenty of work to be done to fulfill those ideals of justice for all, but we were moving forward. I see the backlash orchestrated by those who fear change & losing their power.
I never voted for a republican. I also canvassed against Nixon & demonstrated for McGovern. (Re voting: 40 years ago I did make one exception — for a local NY Assemblyman whose opponent was a weird kid.)

I noticed this at the rally in #Austin I would say 35% of the vocal attendees were over 70-75. With many clearly in their mid-late 80s. Some moved slowly, even used walkers and wheelchairs, but they were committed! I was sad that my own getting older folks were at home watching deranged's parade

Yeah, from what I’ve read, the vast majority were peaceful, and many had the stores immediately desegregating to avoid embarrassment. But there were a lot of cases in Greensboro where counter protesters harassed and attacked participants

Are you for real? Do you think whichever protests you attended are the only ones that count? They beat protestors with their own signs, sprayed them down with high powered house - hell, the Freedom Riders had their bus set aflame in 1961.

That was not my point. Yes, I do know it happened and happened a lot. But, it DIDN’T happen quite a few times as well. There were peaceful protests that made it through unscathed.

People died. Some even got shot by our government. There's a popular song about one such incident. Getting beat up during the civil rights movement was a daily occurrence. If it didn't happen to you or yours, that speaks more about your privilege than the reality on the ground.

What did I do? I voted in every election since the 2nd Clinton administration and wrote my congressmen. I opposed the Patriot Act and was shouted down by everyone, first as un-American, then bluntly as a traitor. I watched the Tea Party in stupid hats burn the POTUS in effigy
Both of my parents are gone now. My dad was a building manager in NYC and despised Trump. He refused to work for them. My mom despised everything he stood for. Part of me is grateful. I don't think they would have fallen for the cult, but no one else in my generation did either. I won't find out
We are sandwich generation.We are raising our kids and providing care for aging parents.We are vastly outnumbered by the generations before and after us.We've been shown for decades that we don't matter. My biggest impact?Raising 2 GenZ's who didn't need to be told what is happening is wrong

This is exactly how I feel. I got in my car, took my cane and my sign to my city No Kings protest..I just had hip replacement surgery 10 weeks prior. But I was good to go. Walked slowly and was with a lot of other boomers! Felt great!
Well done you! Someone at my local protest was using a walker. There were also some parents with strollers. It was great seeing the turnout.
I saw a lot of multi generational families at my protest too. It was really great!
Yes , I showed up w my husband. We were there so our kids didn’t yet have to be. They’re raising families & can’t risk what we can. The time may come for them to make childcare arrangements & check in with an attorney for emergency reference. I’m not afraid but they have reasons to be. Rise up!
Yes. Ageism is wrong wherever it occurs, and isn't a democratic quality. I am shamed by those that suggest they are Democrats and denigrate the elders because of their age.

Been this way since we started this round of protests. Always at least 50% Boomers and sometimes up to 70% I would say. No Kings I did see markedly more Gen Z and Gen X which was great. Millenials are always 2nd largest representation.
Millennials are the most college-educated generation ever. We were told if we just go to college and get a good degree, we'll be set for life instead of "flipping burgers at McDonald's", instead we graduated into a recession and have realized ever since just how screwed we have been by the system.
I understand. But as a boomer who made sure my kids were educated, no one can take that education away from you. You have learned critical thinking skills which will serve you well throughout your life. You are not narrow minded, and will always seek to ask questions, and know more.
Oh, definitely. I love learning. But that doesn't take away from the fact that education is too damn expensive and puts students in debt, and that it's hard to get a job. (I would say "hard to get a job that pays well" and "is in one's field", but honestly it can be hard to get any job. Period.)
It has gotten insanely expensive. Just remember, you are young and have the whole world at your feet. It's okay to reinvent yourself, and strike off on a new path anytime during the journey. I wish you the best. Go follow your dreams, and enjoy life!
Fucking amen. A good degree just gave us a lifetime of student debt most can’t pay off and a generation lucky to maybe buy a house, let alone afford kids.

Boomer is more of a personality than just the age. As far as the ok boomer thing goes. Like the boomers we complain about even come in gen x flavor. Even some millennials. It's a handed down mindset.
