As an American friend of mine who is of Japanese extraction (her parents and other relatives were rounded up), internment camps is a soft term and fundamentally incorrect. These were concentration camps for racially Japanese Americans. Internment camps were for foreigners.

They also detained Germans - my husband’s greatgrandfather worked in airplane factory in NY. He was then detained with other “kraut” workers during the war in case they were spies. They were held and not charged and released after the war. It surprised me, but unlike Japanese not the whole family.
