The weather is a bit wilder, but I'm close to (but not on the edge of) Lake Ontario where it's more temperate. Snow actually has been less due to global warming. As for immigrating here, a digital nomad visa or student visa is probably your best bet. Once you're here, keep reapplying when needed.

Sure, that sounds great on paper. But real opportunities need to be offered by biotech companies to laid-off scientists. I'm married to one such scientist , and it's stressful, to put it mildly.

Canada moves glacially, unfortunately in this case. I have heard that organizations dealing with immigration are overwhelmed by U.S. applicants, even those with job offers. And I was thinking more public research institutions, as opposed to the private biotech industry. Sorry for my ignorance here.

New meds are very expensive for the first few years (5 if I recall correctly). That is to make $ back for the $ spent on R&D.

RFK's decision doesn't really affect the affordability of the medicines. More their existence at all, or the lead time it will take to develop them, meaning that potential treatments are either never developed or are postponed. The effects on patient welfare or survival can never be precisely known.

There is another issue. Free speech. If medical researchers are deterred from publishing their findings or engaging in particular studies, for fear of offending the crank beliefs of a nut who holds the purse strings, then crank science is the only science and quack therapies will go unchallenged.

But that won't affect them in another country. USA laws are only applicable in the US. They may be prohibited from revealing certain info (Confidentiality Agmts) but the knowledge the docs & scientists bring is not subject to that.

The delay will be in getting the vaccine into the country. If there is another pandemic then the country (where the vax is developed) will provide for it's own first. That is what happened last time (USA first) - Canada had to wait months for delivery.

Yes, but from experience sometimes unrealistic expectations are connected with these licences. Plus negotiations and setting up the research always take time so delays are inevitable.

Canada just announced the opening of a new Pfizer lab. A new vax production lab was opened within the last year or so. New labs can be put together quickly - they are like vast warehouse with very expensive machinery. As employees have to be paid everything will be expedited.
