Yeah, the military doesn't really have a choice in the matter. The National Security implications of being unable to maintain a coherent, highly trained fighting force, is a political question, and there are other options, like compulsory military service (Switzerland and Israel) or PMC's.

My father was military. I strongly considered following in my father’s footsteps. My son is starting to look at options after high school and the military is on his list in part because of our home’s pro military view. The thought of him facing down US citizens has me thinking twice.
